I had to think hard about this, but I finally figured out the album that inspired me the most while I was growing up.

TheSmilingPsycho:I think that the sauce being purple, and the fact that there is the same purple colored substance on the hamburger statue, lets you know it isn't water.

Yes this is true! A keen eye may in fact figure that out! :D

anarcha:

All right then, if it's sauce we're talkin' about, herein is my core cognitive dissonance. Sauce must be in the r/g/y spectrum to be recognized as sauce. If it's in the blue/purple/cool spectrum it will register as waterish. If it's in the blue/green area, maybe nuclear toxic sludge.

But then, I could be having some sort of sauce bias. Brrrp (corndog covered w/ R/Y/G).

Hahahaha, well the sauce is purple, and there is a reason for that not yet revealed. Nor will it be for a while, but there is a purpose for the purple! Hehe! :D

anarcha:Haven't read your comic yet, so my take may be valuable as POV from a hapless, overstimulated passerby glancing around at 10 million things:

"Oooh, this looks fun. Colors pop. Clever. Great expressions, I want to find out more about those dog personalities. What is the purple stuff? Hmm, it's coming out of a hamburger tower. Is it sauce or water? What are the breaking boards--did the dogz kung fu somthing? What is that white pyramid thing on the left? Toxic waste dump? There's a lot of blue sky up top, must be some kind of sky thing going on. Oooh! look over there! A cute kitty comic! My feet hurt. I want another corn dog."

Hahahaha!! Awesome! You thought all the things I was hoping people would think. And Ill give one away for ya, yes, it is sauce! ;D

dougwarner59:I really don't know why the water stood out; and I don't know if it is the color as much as the darkness or the amount of space it is taking up. It just caught my eye. It must be a subconcious thing because I can't explain...sort of like abstract art, I hate it, and can't figure out why other people like it.
...now I feel guilty about saying anything because it still looks great. My stupid brain is just so critical that it can find flaws in anything no matter how well they are done.

Haha don't feel bad man! I asked for the critique, I actually lightened up the water so it wouldn't stand out so much, making MD and Spot pop out a little more. SO you were right about that, it looks better now!

Im typing this on my phone and the quote code thing is tough to deal with so Ill do this the old fashion way!

@Centcomm & JRchase

Thats so cool you guys have your postcards by your comp!!! That warms my heart to know that, I don't care how awkwardly mushy that sounded, its totally for reals!

@Moismad

Thank ya kindly!! How much you say? After the con Im gonna sell it online. The price Im not sure yet because it depends on how many copies I dare to order, the more I order the cheaper each one is. But right now it looks like it will be in the 12 to 15 dollar range! I hope that seems fair to people, lol!

@Dougwarner

The water, like the color? Cause its actually supposed to be purple Grubby sauce! It does look kinda like dirty water though, haha!
Yeah the more characters thing was discussed, But I decided anything more might look too cluttered, plus the comic is really about Mad dog and spot, and less about the other characters. Think beavis and butt head, there are other characters in the show, but you always just see beavis and butt head on the covers of there stuff. I think Mad dog and spot are similar in the way the story works. At least the comics that are shown in volume 1, I do plan on expanding on the other characters soon.
There is one thing I disagree with your comment though, the part where you said your comic isn't good enough to be sold! It totally is dude, like seriously! If you made a Dar Val book, with little intermission stories with those side stories you do like the guy who met the devil in the school bus?! That was awesome! Not that dar val needs a break for the mini stories, but it definitely adds to the experience of reading your stories! And if all that was in a book!! even better! I hope you do put it to, print, Ill be the first in line to get one! For real! And if you want any help with the process, Im your bro, bro!

Wow! Thanks for all the awesome suggestions you guys! Here's an update on the cover based off of all your critiques! :D

Here's what I did:

- Fixed "Du mpsville" to more clearly read as "dumpsville"

- corrected the repetition of "1" associated with "Volume 1"

- I made spot slightly smaller and moved him back just a tad to make Mad dog appear bigger. (I didn't make MD bigger because I dont want his feet to close to the trim line of the cut)

- Changed it to just say "A Comic by Looey Q" (still not 100% on how I want to leave that)

- I slightly adjusted the sauce/water to a more purple hue to appear more like sauce instead of water

I think that was it so far! Check it out and let me know your thoughts if you don't mind! :D

If you think I missed an important one, let me know! Or if you have any new ideas, I'd love to hear it!

Draginbeard:Give it a few days and look at it again for any minor tweeks you think of, but l have to say, l like what yo did for this cover!

Good idea there too! LOL, Iv'e been staring at this alot the last 3 days! :D

Yeah, I'm also gonna have a few more things on display so the book won't be alone. I'll have "flyer" print outs displaying some of my funnier pages to hand out.
I'll also have those Ollieville Postcards to give out that I'll do sketches on for people if they want it.

and to top it all off I'm handing out these bad boys!

Image: http://maddog.thecomicseries.com/files/decoder.jpg

and on the back it says:

"You can use this secret decoder ring to unlock secret web pages from Mad Dog's web comic at Ollieville.com

Just visit: Ollieville.com/freeprize for details on how to use this Secret Decoder Ring!"

My point is that the book won't have to stand on its own for promotion!

Oh and by the way! Remember how I sent all you guys those post cards in the mail? :)
Well... when I reach 100 subs (only 4 left to go!) I'm sending you all a secret decoder ring in the mail as another thank you for reading my comic !! :D

Robotwin.com:That looks pretty good! Might try kerning the "DUMPSVILLE" sign a little more because it almost reads "DU MPSVILLE."

Ok cool, I'll play with that!

Robotwin.com: It seems redundant to put the number "1" on there twice. Like maybe put the word "VOLUME" vertically inside the star next to the "1."

Yeah, Originally It said "VOL. ONE" but I figured in the future, if I want to stay with the same format, typing out lover number will make it be really squished.
I like the "1" being by itself in the circle, but I do want to see if I can come up with an alternative to "Volume 1" the way it is now.

Robotwin.com:Also the center-justified margins on the left column seem uneven, so I suggest resizing the text so all the left and right margins are perfectly aligned vertically. Additionally, I think you ought to include more characters on the cover, especially your bitches (female dogs)! And make Mad Dog bigger so it's clear which one he is.

Oh, It's moved over because of the trip line of the printer, When they cut it, it should look centered.

I was thinking of adding characters, like Dolly and Vibes and such, but I'm not sure where they could fit with out it looking cluttered.
And yea, I've been playing with MD and Spot's sizes. I mean they have the "M" and "S" on the collar, but it is a good idea to make MD slightly bigger.

[QUOTE=Robotwin.comAlso try putting a funny gag in a word balloon on the cover so it's obvious this is comics--I don't think you need to write "A WEB COMIC BY" on there because it's technically not a web comic if it's in print.[/QUOTE]

Oh, both of these issues should be resolved with the back cover. Because I want to have a joke on the back of MD and Spot talking that goes like this:

MD: Haha, why would anyone buy this book if they could just read it online for free?

SPOT: Mad dog, SHUT UP!

What do you think? Or should I just have it say "A comic by Looey Q" and leave out the pun about reading it online for free? :)

Hey Everyone!
I'm working on putting together Volume One of Mad Dog to sell at a comic convention I'll be at in Miami!
I just finished the design for the cover of the book! So I have two questions:

If you read Mad Dog, do you think it represents the comic well? Any remarks or suggestions would be great!

If you don't read Mad Dog, do you think it is eye catching and would it interest you to wanna at least pick up and look at? Again, remarks or suggestions would be great!

I'd really appreciate it! Here's the cover!!

UPDATE: This is the current state of the cover after the revisions based on your critiques so far! But don't let that stop you from commenting! :D
