Fubar:OH BOY WHERE SHOULD I START

The Big White Void
: when people (usually manga) only draw the characters and don't even bother with backgrounds or they're just a few scribbles thrown in there. Reeks of lazy.

Also gradient backgrounds are an excellent way to make me hate a comic. I don't mind using gradients with like, shading, but when the BG is nothing BUT? I won't read it.

In gag-a-days it's slightly more acceptable, but it's still something that WILL stop me from enjoying and reading your comic.

I don't mind inconsistency as long as the change is for the better, and not a case of the artist suddenly going lazier with it.

Chibis. Especially if they're tacked onto a serious story, it's just jarring and dumb. Even worse if they're chibi all the time.

High School Hijinks: well pretty much any school-focused humor comic WITH WACKY RANDOM (stereotyped) CHARACTERS.

Excessive fanservice: I like boobs just as much as the average Joe, but goddamn why must some comics shove them in my face all the time. Boob-ads go into this category as well. It's gotten to the point where I pay attention to the boobs only because 9 times out of 10 they are some hideous balloons. BREASTS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY.

Tank Girl/Haruko-wannabes: I.e. the random and randomly violent lead female. Usuall an effort to make the comic PUUUUNK AND EDGY MAAAAAAAAAAN. Protip, it's been done to death and done much, much better (see Tank Girl (but oh god not the movie) and FLCL).

Artists who say "I don't have to improve, I have a style." No, you're just a lazy git.

If you stylise, you gotta know what it is you're stylizing. Otherwise it ends up like all the awful wannabe manga stylizations, like the pointy jaws, GIGANTIC EYES with no pupils and shinier than Flavor Flav's mouth, weirdass, barely existant mutant noses, godawful proportions, spiky hair jutting in all the cardinal directions and shiny skin.

I love anime and manga, but I hate it when people just copy it without understanding why the style is like it is.

Skullbie:

-Tricked to click smackjeeves banner with full color orgasmic art. Actual comic is some floating heads sketch comic. >:(

This.

Also what Ehc said.

Yeah I propably left some stuff out, I'll update the list if I can be bothered.

I have to disagree with almost ALL of this post. Because it pretty much sounds like you are hating on anyone who isn't professionally amazing. I sit here and wonder, wow. What sort of comics DO you read? Because this eliminated most everything. And do I even want you reading my stuff? Because you sound like you would critique the art more than have the fun that the comic is intended to create. I don't mind an art critique, but this just sounds like you hate everything about a comic that isn't published and someone hasn't spent 50 hours completing. I draw for the fun of drawing, not to please others. Maybe you should try to feel some of the passion that the artist has instead of worrying about technicalities.

On a further note, I don't have many pet peeves concerning comics. I'll list the ones I do have:

1. When artists leave for extended periods of time despite an update schedule and don't tell you. It's rather annoying for people who follow the comic, especially if they are missing for a long time and leave fans to wonder if the comic is even going to continue or not.

2. Teen angst. I had enough of that in my High School years. I don't even fully understand why angsty teens want to read stories about angst? Sounds counter-productive.

3. When comics are posted in a format that's hard to read. Why do I want to read a comic I have to work hard to get to?

I just have to say after reading this everything about this thread made me angry on sooooo many different levels. So instead of joining the argument, I think I'll save myself the blood pressure increase and go take a nap. And to think! I actually clicked on this thread with the interest of learning what sort of comic he wanted drawn! Now I am just annoyed and sad. *sigh*
