Frosty:Then I started doing stuff in photoshop, though I was reeeeaally bad at it. For some reason I couldn't get it in my head for over a hundred pages that these horrible lines did NOT look good

For example;

Speed lines

I have like totally progressed from stickmen to things that actually look like things
let's compare:

yes that was actually the limit of my drawing

I drew that a few weeks ago, it remains to be my bestest thing ever
it's not perfect but it's a damn sight better than stickmen

Oh crap. I don't think I have any of my old art around any more, I'll have to dig around in some of the old boxes mum has and see if I can find any to post here C:

Beginning.

A little later.

Later still.

Now.

My art has evolved so much in just under a year.

I don't have any ooollld art lying around, probably because it took two years to reach an acceptable art form...or at least what I thought was acceptable.

When I was a wee tyke, my parents got me a set of drawing grids - You know, the circles, ovals, etc. At around age 7-8, I sat down and created Supercircle, a comic strip that I wrote adn drew for THREE HUNDRED strips which was all about the adventures of Supercircle, his lady love Penny Perilous, and his arch nemeses Evil Square and Treacherous Triangle. What can I say, I was seven...

image

Flash forward to the late 80's and I was doing pen & ink art for various small press horror mags:

Then into the early 90's and there was a lot of cover illustration, color art, con exhibitions, etc. These two were done in acrylic, like most of my painted work.

Actually, I take that back... IIRC, Nosferatu was done with pen & ink and airbrushed inks over it, with some acrylic and watercolor wash for the background. The Lovecraft image was acrylic, though.

--My later stuff is a bit NSFW, gorey sort of stuff. Just a warning--

The beginning of my journey

Here is where I first ventured into Ryu's Krew, my second attempt at making a serious comic. This was inked with Paint.net's line tool and colored in Photoshop. I have no idea what i was doing.

Boop

This was a little better. I actually learned what scripting was at this point, and I think I decided on black and white art, and I was going for a cartoony look. Really not -too- horrible. I mean..well..okay yeah it's horrible.

Eeeeee

More experimenting with photoshop, more planning, Grim Teddy enters the picture.

Yeah

Here's where my style started to get noticably darker. Inking with brush pens and shading certain parts with markers (greyscale), I started learning what i really wanted from my art.

Better

Working on perfecting my darker style, using Pilot Precise V5 pens to ink, and fully coloring the pages with Copic markers. This is where Ryu's Krew started to take a video-game esque part to it as well.

Here I am now

It's neat seeing how much everyone improves over time if you just keep drawing.

This is a couple of years old now, but here's a thingy I made showing how my art changed over about seven years for my OLD webcomic that I don't do anymore. I guess the age timeline would be about 14/15 - 21.

There's several 'memes' on DA floating around where you redraw a really old picture and essentially kick your own ass (artistically speaking, of course).

So I redrew my old character. Maybe sometime i'll post the art from 2006..

image

BEFORE
2008. Traditional media. Inked using various pens over a light box. No reference used.

AFTER
2012. Digitally inked using Paint too Sai. No reference used.

Pretty sure this thread would still be active if all the art trade threads hadn't buried it, so, totally bringing it back because I found some really really terrible old stuff I did, and you know, why make a whole new topic?

this. Is. Terrible. And most of this stuff is only from 2009.

I... I... I remember I didn't know how to draw people, and I wanted to draw people, and I never used references... and oh my god why

I can't even remember making that

A portrait of Miranda, from about 11 months ago.

For contrast, here's a piece from April: http://fukshia.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4x5i6v

I can't believe how much I've improved during that time. Getting the Cintiq was a definite help but it's still p nice to see I've come such a long way.

Actually it's quite interesting seeing proto-Loki without, for example, his recognisable sharp cheekbones.

WARNING: This will most likely burn your eyes. Keep away from children.

Before I moved here to comicfury, I had started here on flikr. For the most part, things are chronological. But of course, that only covers digital art (plus what little scans I managed to get through my buggy printer); I've been hand-drawing art for so long that I have literally binders and bins full of old drawings. Everything from pencils to crayons to markers. (Mostly pencils.)

No way to assemble a timeline for 'em, but I'd upload 'em and do the best I can if I had a reliable scanner. (I don't.) Stick figures, simple art, and (primarily) weapons.

But digitally, Flikr holds the whole story up 'til I moved here, in late '09. (Note that they were all saved as BMPs, back when flikr allowed that, and they were NOT auto-converted to JPEGs, and they were NOT always shown at their real size; you could zoom in on images which you normally could not zoom in on, a feature they no longer have. Hence why there are some duplicates.)

For instance, compare my first attempt at digital armor to, say, Davos's current armor on the left. Still not good, still could use a lot of improvement, but noticeably better, despite you still being able to see where I started.

Uh-huh. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.
..I wish I could do that. :/

I was never good at watercolors. Will never be, because I do not like it at all, because I don't do them much, because I am not good at it. (see the infinite loop here)

But I wonder, do you have a devart or website, Fools? Do you do any non-comic projects for traditional art? I'd like to see :D
