The old man chuckled, a wheezing sound reminiscent of a dying mans final breath. The youth next to him looked over with a concerned look, before returning his gaze to the packed town square. A man clad in priestly robes was preaching to the crowd, a large grin taking up most of his face whenever he paused. Silence fell as the man pulled a sheet of paper, mostly blank, from somewhere within his robes. The eyes of every member of his audience latched on to it, following it as he nailed it to a nearby post, bowed, and remounted his horse. The crowd massed towards the paper as the man rode off, the seemingly permanent grin still firmly attached to his face.
"The Monastery in the Mountains…"
The old mans sentence was cut off by a strong bout of coughing. The boy turned to him, now giving him his full attention.
"Who was that, grandfather? What was he doing here?"
"A messenger. A messenger from the mountains. It seems they're in need of volunteers again…" He sighed, then gestured towards the tall mountains in the east. "Up there, that's where they live. The monks of the mountain. They say that the gods are closer there, that they hear, see and even speak to the gods themselves."
The coughing returned, but the boy hardly noticed, his head lost in thoughts of the legendary place.
"Why would they want us though? Surely such a holy place is not open to everyone?"
The reply came with a wheezing chuckle. "They only come because they need us. Every few decades, there is a ritual that must be performed. To do so, they need more participants than just those who live there. So, they come to us." His tone changed, softened with remembrance, blunted with melancholy. "I was chosen for the last ceremony…" The words were lost in another bout of coughing. The boy hardly noticed, already wondering if there was room left on the volunteer notice. As he stood to leave, the older mans bony hand grabbed on to his arm.
"You're too young, boy. It takes age and maturity to deal with what happens up there."
The pair watched in silence, one lost in memories, the other in disappointment as the crowd slowly began to disperse. The boy stood up and wandered off before too long, leaving the man lost in thought. He looked up at the mountains, and sighed, thinking of the mysterious messenger.
"Bastard has no right to be that happy."
