Mafia XXI: The Monastery in the Mountains
Welcome to Mafia XXI!
Sorry for the massively long intro post, but there’s a few things I need to mention.
Basic rules are in here, if you need any more clarification then feel free to ask :D A few things to note:
-Same old, same old: Death by vote during the day phase, mafia get a private kill during the night phase. each phase will last as close to 24 hours as we can manage.
-Role revealing and pming are allowed, however there are... drawbacks for doing so. I’ll get to them a little bit later. A note: Please forward a copy of any pm you send or receive to me.
-Roles are secret. Sorry for keeping you in the dark, but we felt like it so ehhhh
-There are two mafia. There may or may not be a conversion at some point.
-Phase updates will include clues as to the identities of mafia, and (much less frequently) the identities of good guys with roles. Don’t be afraid to over analyse what seems to be flavour, there’s a chance you’ll find something worthwhile. (That one up there /\ has nothing, however)
I’ve probably forgotten something, if you want to know anything, once again feel free to ask. Anyways, onto the new stuff.
Rituals
This is a special type of role, subject to a few special rules. Firstly, these roles may only be used once per game, so choose wisely as to when to use them. Secondly, for a variety of magical reasons, on the night you choose to use them you are immune to all night interaction. Any role that tries to interact with you, including mafia kills, will not be able to find or hit you.
Traits
People have personalities, and I feel like giving them to you. Traits are a new role supplement, of which every person will receive one. Unlike roles, traits can be both positive, negative or mostly useless. They also only have very minor effects, so if you do get a negative trait it shouldn’t be a major disadvantage. As with the roles, the full list of traits is concealed, but I can tell you that almost all traits occur multiple times.
Suspicion
The punishment system. Certain activities, like pming, vegging, role revealing, and a variety of others are considered suspicious. Each adds a certain amount to your suspicion score, and if you stack up enough you may receive punishment. Suspicion levels clear on phase changes, so you do have some room for dalliance. Just don’t push it too far :P
That’s about it, I think. I know we have some new people here, just a note that if you don’t enjoy this game with its new things, try not to avoid future games forever. I wanna see if these work, if they don’t this game may be terrible. The general concept of the games is good fun though :D
Again, if anyone has any questions at all, feel free to ask them in thread or via pm. You should all be receiving (or have already received) a pm with your role and trait.

As promised, the mysterious messenger returned before the week was out. Grinning widely, he looked over both the near-full list, and the small crowd of eager recruits that had gathered in wait. He gestured for them to follow him, keeping his horse to a slow walk as he led them away from their homes, towards the trail that led up the mountain.
The trip was long, and most were exhausted, cold and hungry by the time the magnificent frontal façade of the monastery came into sight, perched on the mountainside like some wild beast waiting to strike. A chill breeze blew across the bare trail, hurrying the villagers on their way. While the smiling man seemed not to notice the chills of the mountainous atmosphere, the crowd of volunteers, accustomed to the warm spring air of their home, huddled together for warmth as they walked. They trudged up the staircase, into the wide, welcoming archway of the monastery.
The murmurs of the crowd fell to naught as they walked between the tall columns, among the lush gardens, under the intricately carved archways of the lavish entryways. But there was more, more than just the elegant architecture, the luxurious decoration. There was an aura of grandeur, of majesty, of respect that transcended the physical aspects. There was something special about this place.
Still leading both the crowd and his horse, the smiling man brought the crowd to a stop in a vaulted cathedral, waiting patiently until all had entered and stopped. Letting his horse wander off into one of the many adjoining doorways, the man ascended to his place behind the altar.
"My brothers, you are welcome in this place."
The man seemed to change before their eyes. He was still short, physically unimpressive, strangely excitable and happy, and yet now there was something more. The grandeur of the place seemed to flow through him. He raised his arms, repeating his welcome.
"You are welcome in this holy place, and I thank you for your willingness to aid
us in our time of need."
"Wait just a damn moment," the gravelly voice of Sprite called out. "Aren't you just a messenger? Are we not worth the attention of your master?"
The man chuckled irritably, seeming disappointed with the interruption. "We here are rather… short-staffed. Yes, I am a messenger. But I am also the master of this place, as well as a number of other roles. I do whatever is necessary."
A lighter, nasally voice piped up. "How-" Sprite coughed, looking embarrased before continuing in his earlier gravelly tones. "Just how short-staffed are you?"
The man glared, his grin shrinking at the corners momentarily. "We have as many as we need." Noticing more movement in the crowd, he continued with a wave of his hand. "If you must know the details, there are two permanent residents at this place. You have met myself, and you will be properly introduced to the other later."
Raising his voice before any others could interrupt, the grinning man began to talk. "You are here for a reason. I'm sure you know that much by now, but you may wish to know exactly why you have been called here. This is a special time for us here. During this time, the gods are closer. Close enough to interact with, if the proper rites are fulfilled. And they must be fulfilled, which is where you come in."
The man broke off with a sigh, giving the volunteers a moment to murmur doubts and wonder to each other. Seeming excited, Nightsky piped up. "So what do we need to do? When do we start?"
The grin faltered for just a moment, a barely noticeable lapse in concentration. "Tonight. Your first duty starts at nightfall tonight."
None failed to notice the changing tone of his voice. What was once a hopeful sermon of grandeur and amazing occurences was now tainted with doubt and sadness.
Magravan stepped forward, hat bells tinkling, a slight frown on his face. "And what, may I ask, must we do?" he asked grimly.
The man sighed. "One of you must die."
A gasp, a ripple of panic tore through the group. The monk raised his voice, gesturing for peace and silence in the group. "People, I am truly sorry but there is no other way. One of you must die for the proceedings to continue. Only one. Once this sacrifice is made, the rest of your time here will be a fulfilling, spiritual, enjoyable experience. This must be done."
"Who? Who is going to die?"
"That is for you to decide amongst yourselves." The panic had begun to settle, sinking into a general state of anxiety and melancholy as the monk continued. "As I said, you have until tonight to make this decision. My assistant will take you to your temporary lodgings, where you will be supplied with food, facilities for bathing, and anything else you may require. I have business to attend to; I shall not see you again until this evening." He hurried off, leaving the group in a daze. None moved to stop him, nobody even spoke up. He turned back quickly before leaving. "I'm sorry. I truly am." With that, he was gone.
Before anyone could comment, the clattering of hooves echoed through the vaulted ceiling. The monks horse had entered, walking slowly across the stone floor. It swung its head, seeming to gesture towards one of the many exits before walking towards the same. The stunned crowd stood motionless, making the impatient horse puff and stomp its hooves. One by one, they began to follow as the horse trotted off down the small hallway.

The circuitous journey finally ended with an open door, the only one they had seen so far. The horse once again swung its head, mane trailing behind. The group filed in, followed by the tall beast which proceeded to kick shut the door behind them. Gradually, they gravitated to the furniture sprawled across the room, each finding a place to sit and take in the flood of information and oddness they had experienced.
One thing hung over them all; the duty they had to fulfil. By the end of this day, one of those in the room had to die.
NOTE: There is a horse in the room. Just thought I'd mention that again.
