What good free MMOs have you played? Now when I say "free", I mean all the content is accessible. Maybe a few restricted features exist, but most of them are lifted if conditions in the game are met (such as playing for a certain number of total hours, buying something via microtransaction, etc..)

Star Trek Online is the first MMO that I've encountered that's this way. All the content is free, and most of the restrictions are lifted after 20 some hours of gameplay (not all at once). You download the game for free (you used to pay for it), you get a decent amount of customization options for your characters, you're free to customize the ships you get. You don't have to buy anything in the store and in fact you can grind for the points instead of paying in cash if you don't want to drop cash onto cash cards for the game.

And being a Star Trek fan, I'm a bit too engrossed in this game(but not so bad that I can't work to pay my bills).

Take in contrast the so called "allegedly" free game. Games that advertise as free to play, but free accounts play with their hands and feet tied behidn their back and are forced to put cash down just to get themselves untied. Like that one MMOFPS where everything was free... except the bullets...

So what free games like this have you played?

Maplestory. It was when I was in elementary school. I stopped playing it when I realized I had better things to do in my life...But I STILL have friends who are playing that thing, so it must be pretty addictive.

This happens to me. I'll play it, get bored of it, play it a couple years later and get engrossed in all the new stuff.

Also, Minecraft can be called an MMO.

I dunno how it runs anymore. I did it a long time ago. According to my friends, they gets lots of coins from events and such...

..I don't like these cutesy little character games. I like blood. Guns. Monsters. Bam.

I played Guild Wars when it first came out back in the day. GW2 is coming out of beta pretty soon, I haven't looked into it because I got pretty bored of the original game.

The only MMOs I'm really looking forward to are The Secret World (Beta is really awesome) and the World of Darkness MMO which doesn't have any info yet. Those aren't free though.

I haven't played it yet, but Planetside 2 looks absolutely great. Its the sequel to one of the very first and only MMOFPS games (the only other one was like WW2 Online)

The beta is probably going to start up here soon, and I know a lot of people on CF are probably going to play it. It doesn't look like its pay to win at all (at the moment) too.

I would recommend looking at some videos of it, it looks like its going to be big. And its going to be at E3, so I bet a lot more info is going to come out then about it.

If you still have a dreamcast for some reason and you're willing to seek out a private server, Phantasy Star Online is excellent.

The only problem with PSO is that your character is literally the slowest thing in reality. By the time you run from one end of a dungeon to another you will have experienced the heat death of the entire universe.

There's absolutely no reason whatsoever that one needs to seek out an old dreamcast to play PSO these days. Blue Burst for the pc not only has more content(ep. 4 kekekeke), but has a more active playerbase and is much easier to get your hands on due to the game being free so long as you paid subscription back in the day. PSO is a great game; the most active private server right now that I'm aware of is probably schthack.

There's also this ok free mmo-ish game I played for a while named Vindictus. It was interesting insofar as the gameplay was very physics based and ran on Valve's Source engine. It isn't mindblowing or anything, but not too shabby. I mean it's a free MMO, so it still has a bunch of silly pay stuff and silliness, but it exists.

Another game I had fun with for a while is Realm of the Mad God. It's a free mmo-rogulike ish thing. It's an interesting thing to check out. It's pretty unique for a MMO.

With the exception of PSO, though, you're probably for the best ignoring the free MMO scene in general. Most of them suck pretty hard, and even the ones that don't are at best mediocre.

Maplestory is too convoluted for me to play anymore. I've played a lot during highschool, then off and on my first few years of college. But I haven't played in years. As MMOs go, it's a relatively weaker one. But I thought it was adorable. When I left, it was expanding really quickly, with new classes, events, areas to play, in-game competitions, and art styles, that the game lacks a sense of unity now.

Since I'm having withdrawals from being away from my D&D group, I really need an alternative. The Sims 3 just isn't cutting it. =\

Ultima one through five acted as a substitute for Dungeons and Dragons when I quit. Speaking of Ultima, wasn't there a supposedly good MMORPG in that series?

Yes, there it. It's the bloody Dreamcast. The Dreamcast console costs less than half the price of a modern game nowadays, and it's one of the best consoles ever made. Buying a Dreamcast along with Phantasy Star Online will cost forty dollars, and it's one of the absolute best ways you can spend your money in terms of games. It's an incredible MMORPG. I don't even like MMORPGs. It's a must if you like RPGs in general, and probably one of the best in the MMORPG category. I say this without any knowledge of MMORPGs.

I remember that back in middle school, everybody seemed to be playing this game called Maplestory. I remember being instantly repelled by the art style and never even picking it up again. Looking at it know, I don't know why I was repelled by the adorable art style, but I still probably won't play it. The SNES just has so many great games that I still need to play.

I've heard that Dragon Quest X will be an MMORPG, and considering that Dragon Quest is amazing in every conceivable way, maybe you should pick it up when it comes out?

There. That's all I know about MMORPGs.

I find that it's all about the people you play with. Find a good group and the game excels.

But you kill cute things!

I've also heard about TERA recently. It is a subscription MMO but I've only heard good things about it.

Not exactly MMOs but I do love them both: Second Life and Onverse. Onverse is geared pretty much to tweens, but can be fun. Second Life is a vitual world. You can get an avatar and explore it for free, and picks up a lot of free stuff if you know where to look (90% of in-world content is user-made). With Second Life there are games and role-playing you can do in-world, otherwise it tends to be a lot of dance parties building (or Webcomics).

Otherwise, check out the Free MMO and MMORPG Gamelist at MMORPG.com.

You seem to have missed the rest of my paragraph there, making my first statement lose any meaning of context whatsoever. I'll repeat myself, this time spelling it out to make things clearer: There is a superior version of Phantasy Star Online than the DC version released for the PC called Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst which is also much easier to obtain. As of such, for the purposes of playing PSO, it is completely redundant to track down a dreamcast. I never said the dreamcast or PSO were bad, I love both of them.

But ken, the dreamcast is one of those evil disc-based systems! :o

I've played my share of free mmos over the years and none of them have really held my interest for more than a week or so at a time.
Here's the official Ehcuat list of games he's played and his thoughts on them!:

City of Heroes: probably the best F2P game I've tried. The actual gameplay is a little samey (most quests take place in the same 5-6 types of dungeon and all of them are either "kill these guys" or "find these objects") but it's fun to just play with chargen and make goofy outfits. Also the community is pretty big on rp if that's your thing.

Dragonica: it's a side scrolling beat-Em-up kinda like maple story, but with much much less grinding and actual skills to use in combat. The big thing I liked about this game was the timed and graded missions, stuff like clear time and damage taken effected how much loot you got from the boss. It had some serious balance issues and a lack of content past level 30 when I played though.

RF Online: Korean grindfest with a focus on pvp. The main draw of the game is the "Chip War", a server-wide event where each of the three factions would fight for control of the central mines, giving the winning side access to weapon and armor building resources to help in future pvp encounters. It's a pretty neat idea, and the economy is pretty solidly player-run, but it's still full of grinding and the standard google translate-style Korean to English localization.

Perfect World Online: you can play as a snake-controlling anime catgirl that rides around on a giant flying sword. That's the only good part of the game.

Flyff: I don't even remember anything about this game except accidently wandering into a high level area and somehow stealing a bunch of gold from someone. It was pretty bad.

There's more I've played for maybe an hour, but I can't be bothered to remember any of them right now

Okay... I know Champions Online is free to play, but City of Heroes... it's the first I've heard of the game being free (I used to pay a subscription for it). I take it you still have to buy all the software?

Basically what attracted me to STO is that you used to have to buy the software, but now you can download it for free. I'm sure a lot of F2P MMOs are the same...
