There's lots of different ways to gauge how big your comic is but what's your prefered method? Mine is rather specific, I gauge sucess in how many dedicated commenters I have. The kind of people how comment on every comic and leave either feedback or a simple "great job, funny comic".

Basiclly If I can lift someone's spirits, I'm succeding.

readers, comments, votes, they're all linked to one another.

Qualitative measurement: do I like it? Do people say they like it? (comments) If yes, its successful.

Quantitative measurement: Probably the one you're referring to. I find the most efficint way to check my progress is pageviews. It's simple. More I have, more readers probably. Visits can also be measured, but you cant tell if that visitor actually read the comic or just looked at the front page and left.

If someone enjoys it, I'd say I'm doing my job pretty well. That's what I'm here for: Not to be famous, but to entertain people.

I second this sentiment! Also, if I'm enjoying the crap out of doing this comic. And I am.

If I'm having fun really. And I find it fun to read actual comments. Not pats on the back. If I wanted one of those, I'd just pat myself.
I enjoy making this comic, I enjoy experimenting with new action poses, pushing myself to work on backgrounds, and really it's forced me to up my game more times than one. If you look at the Reduxes that are coming out. I judge the success of the comic on a personal level.
And by actual comments I mean, something like "I can't believe Cyn do that!" versus
"Great Page." the second one is a pat on the back. The first one is a reaction brought on by the comic.

I guess for small folk like me, we'd be happy enough to have people who'd constantly watch and comment on our stuff.

On another note, Zeph your pool bar idea is most coolest unique thing from this comic site I've ever seen. Only problem with that is getting water on my drink.

I'm thinking covers. With bendy-straws.

That way no water in the drink.

I'd probably say by how many fans you have. Not people that drop in, read your comic and never come back, people who are genuinely excited to see what'll happen in the next update.

i think that's relative, because sometime people see your comic, subscribe and forget about it, then there are people who are the opposite, they never subscribe but always see your comic.

I'd just be happy with people leaving comments. They mean something to me since I know it means people are engaging with the work. When people don't leave comments, I assume they didn't really engage much.

I might be being silly though.

Neh. I love comments, too. I even wrote "I love comments" right next to the "post a comments" link. But my latest updated page has no comments. D:

So I guess there're just people out there who do comment, and there are people who don't.

I'm only a small time bit player and as such, success at the moment is measured off in spikes of 100s of views. The thing is that I'm sure most people don't leave comments anywhere, so if this is the case, then that's only real quantitative measure I have.

People leaving comments though is an ego boost and sort of validation that you exist.

Comicrank, Topwebcomics rank, Unique visitors, page views and possibly some others... I'll let you know if we ever get to be 'successful' :)

I measure it by:

1) how many people your comic has made a difference in.
2) how much of a difference your comic has made in the life of someone.

That... is comic success. And I'm still far from it. :)

Lying? You're right... I measure success by how many people are burned in Fooligula's wrath furnaces.

That's emperor Fooligula to you.

But also I would say your comic is fairly successful, considering it's got the highest number of subscriptions, commenters and readers on CF :U

Though this brings up a question.

How does that popular now thing work? I see comics with lots of subscriptions, then one with like 15. So.. it doesn't work on how many subscriptions to the comic?
Just curious.

Since you mentioned it.

I'm think Popular Now is comics with the most recent activity, so comments, ratings or views in a short amount of time. I think that's what it is.

I measure the success of a webcomic by how much money it generates. I'm not even being cynical about that - if a comic is generating enough money, then the author can afford to set aside time to improve the work.

Also, I measure them by comments, because any reader input is good reader input. I wish I got comments. /begging
