This thread is for doing artistic studies. In this thread we shall make studies of paintings, using whatever artistic medium is desired, and post the results, where others can critique them.

Should you not know what I mean by study, simply try to copy a painting as accurately as possible. It helps to pay special attention to how the artist has handled areas that you struggle with.

You can make a study of any master painting or drawing you wish to, but I intend to update the thread with pictures of various masterworks fairly often, so please use one of these if you don't feel like searching!

If you have any other favourite pieces of art to study, please post them for others to benefit from (naturalistic paintings and drawings only, please, since that's the whole point of these studies).

So, let's begin. Here's Caravaggio's "Narcissus". Try to be as accurate as possible!

When you say art study, do you mean trying to recreate the painting as closely as possible? Or can it be just focusing on the lighting, pose, fabric, or any other aspect that we feel we mostly need to work on?

I usually just try to recreate the whole thing, since that practices all elements, but it's up to you what you do.

I will be sifting through my Rembrandt images soon just for this task. I'll try and get something done inbetween study.

It has a few pretty bad mistakes (like the head being waaaaaayyyy too small) and the colours are kinda fudged (I blame that on my cintiq :I).

Anyway, kudos to Scim for coming up with this thread this was really fun, I didn't have to think much and just zero out and paint. It was relaxing.

This is awesome. I will have to try something out when I have more than a moment of free time.

Probably a little too rough but I am not as patient as I should be. I also really need to improve my blending. But otherwise I'm pretty pleased and it was fun to do.

I once tried this with Albrecht Durer's Young Hare.

Nope. Did not work.

Usual lurker here-- posting for two reasons: one, showing my face and saying I'm doing this might help me actually do it.

Two: don't forget about Google Art Project

I forgot about it until I saw this thread and went searching. Sadly, Caravaggio's Narcissus isn't there. If you want to browse but don't know where to start, click the 'Discover' icon on the left and scroll to your heart's content-- log in with your Google account and set up a private gallery/folder to keep track of the ones you like.

I'm sick of people studies lately, so here I go on Deer and Deer Hounds in a Mountain Torrent by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer.

Tried this out. Worked on the painting 'Pinkie'. I have been a fan of it for a long time because I just love how delicate the painting on the girl is and the Huntington Library is nearish to where I live so it is one of the paintings I have actually gotten to see a few times.

Proportions are a bit off, mostly in the torso and arms. So something to work on next time. Also, I think looking at the two pieces together finally has convinced me to make my shadows darker.

Study of Bourgeureau's "L'innocence". Spent far too long on this...

and here's a link to large version of the original painting, if anyone wants to try it.

Gonna work on both of these today. Results coming in later.

In the meanwhile, ya'll oughta take part in this thread, it's great practice!

Hated every minute of doing this for some reason. IDK, the pic felt so 'busy', it was really annoying and I couldn't get a god grasp of this piece. Ehhh.

I'll do the Pinkie one tomorrow.

Here's my study. I tried to paint it up, but it looked muddy and horrible.

I liked the underdrawing I did for it though, here's that instead.

Here's as far as I got. May or may not go back and work on it... but man. I'm soooo picking simpler ones from now on.

image

Everything's in various stages of not-done.

Needed to work on texture, but didn't get far enough to do much of that. Learned a few things, regardless.

I think this piece might be a nice, easy piece for a study:

This young lady appeared to us to be loitering at the beach with no obvious intent. We felt some character building exercise would be in order and have thus donated an inflatable beach ball from our club merchandise cupboard to enrich her coastal experience.

We also felt that this improved the compositional balance somewhat, if we may be so bold.

Well I think I know what my next attempt will be, it is a gorgeous picture. Do I dare try doing it not just on the computer...I am leaning towards that. Though I only have watercolors, but I say I shall try it, and worse care have some totally tripy version of the painting.
