I have a Summary & Cast section, Fanart section, an About section, and a Links section. I look at extra pages of comics I really like, so I don't see a problem with having them.

They're fun little extra bits to see.

If I like the comic or curious about it, I will look at the cast pages and extra art or fan art made for them.

All those little buttons/links, I cannot help myself lookin' through them!

Hmm, there's characters, there's the about page, inspiration, and fan stuff that are visible...

...But those are just the tip of the iceberg. I have a total of 16 extra pages if you know where to look, with plans for more on the way. While only those four are visible, you can reach all 16 via links contained within those four. The pages have a great deal of continuity, interlinking between each other a great deal.

Of course, I must admit, I didn't want to have THIS many extra pages, but to some extent it was forced on me, at least, in the case of the Inspiration and Backstories pages, which kept on getting cut off (probably due to some character limit which I am unaware of).

And with so much to explore on MY site...I make sure that (quite frankly) the extra stuff is the FIRST thing I explore on OTHER sites, even before I've read the comic. It's that important to me, and can make the difference between hooking me and losing me as a reader. ;)

I think it's really nice when webcomics have extra pages. Like others have said, I love searching around on webcomic I enjoy. I've put together quite a few pages such About, Fan Art and Unpublished Comics as I find it enjoyable to put them together.

Speaking of those 'About' pages what do you guys put in there?

A quick summary?
An explanation of what's going?
Or a quick info about yourself?

I always wanted to make one but was confused with what to write. :X

I've yet to get things set up, but I would probably set up at least a page for characters and an author page linking to dA, tumblr, etc. Those are the two pages I would bother to look at as a reader. As for extra art, I'd probably include more polished extras with the comic updates and the more scrappy looking ones onto my art/sketchblog.

Yes I do look at them when the comic is really interesting or if the art is nice, I also enjoy cast pages very much, it gives you a good insight about their personalities and back stories so yeah, extra stuff IS important

I recently did an extra page where I put my extra art and fan art altogether
And I really gotta finish my cast page ughh

I should also mention, forgetting to update Character pages is such an endemic amongst Webcomics that TVTropes has whole page dedicated to it. Level 30's current character page uses old art for Gardevoir and Roll and has none for the others. We're currently working on an update.

I have one extra page, a summary of the comic through the first chapter and a half, with the hope that if anyone is completely turned off by the initial art they will just read that and skip to the newer pages. I had an extras page with sketches or inspiration for the comic, but as I finally started to use the blog I am moving that stuff there.

I think I will make a cast page at some point, as I would love to be able to share more of the background about the characters.

I look at the extra pages of comics I really like, I find that I tend to look at cast pages the most.

The biggest thing to get me to look at them (as I can be totally unobservant) is to make a comment about it in the author comments, especially if you just added it.

If I'm really interested in a comic, I like it to have an "About" page with some info about how it's made, the author, etc.

Yeah, I'll look at them if the comic interests me enough. Especially character pages, sometimes even if I don't care for the comic a whole lot. I just kinda like to see other peoples' characters.

As for the extra pages I made, I have "characters" (which needs portraits drawn for it, as of right now it's not too interesting) and "links" where I put up credits for things from other sites I've used like fonts, and links to other places I am on the web like tumblr, and links to other webcomics I read.

Actually just last night I deleted the blank "about" link I had set up because I couldn't figure out what to put there. There's a summary in the profile page, as far as I'm concerned that's good enough for now. Maybe going around to other about pages will give me some inspiration for it.

What do I put in the sections?

-Characters: Pretty obvious. Contains their full names, a portrait of them, their race and gender, a summary of the important gaming stuff about them (alignment, element, their fighting style), their personalities, and a brief summary of their backstory (with a link to their full one if it has been created).

-About: Originally, I thought that it'd be slightly redundant with my comic summary, but then I decided that whereas the comic summary is supposed to be brief (the recommendation is, what, three sentences? Something like that. It's in the other topic), the About Page would be detailed.
While it's still under construction, my About Page is meant to tell everything about the setting:
What it is, what it used to be, how it's grown, and touching upon how it was created, and why. (Though those cross over into the Inspiration Page.) Essentially, it describes not only the world, but also the setting, and might also include a basic description of the plot when I'm finished (though that would cross over into the Characters page, which covers this to some degree).

-Inspiration: Pretty obvious; this is what inspired my world, and how. It's a very long list, detailing how things started, how they have evolved, and what influences came in where, doing this and that to the comic, improving things to what they are.

-Fan Stuff: Originally just fanart (what little I had, anyway), it now covers...well, all fan stuff. It covers fanart still, but it also covers things I am a fan OF. These little things are things which probably won't appear on the Inspiration page, but ended up still being an inspiration to me to keep on going. (It's also still under construction, for the record.
...I have a long to-do list, okay?!? :P)

This seems incredibly redundant to me. All this information is suppose to come across from the comic. You shouldn't have to write a novel for the background information. Your site isn't suppose to be a wiki.

Personally, I feel the about page should only be behind-the-scenes material... things about the production of the comic. A blurb about the inspiration, author bio, contact information, personal links to a gallery or other work, maybe also be an FAQ.

YES! I agree with having extra pages , cast xtras and stuff.
My main comic has a Cast , Gallery , and Tech pages to explain some of the more common questions , like "andriods bleed?"
ive gotten asked that a few times. i love reading all the extra stuff the hard part is to keep it from being "spoilerish"

not sure if im going to add "luna-stars" tech to the "tech" page or give it one of its own .. I guess I need a cast page for it too , although there arent many cast members yet. not sure who actually reads the Tech pages though .. >_<

Not nearly as redundant as you may think. Keep in mind, I'm writing a whole RPG for my comic. As in, built-from-scratch, entirely-original, fully-functional RPG. Because the world the comic's set in runs on said RPG.

That's...not something you can describe very well in-comic. It just isn't.

Regardless, I need the page anyway (rendering the need to describe it in-comic pretty moot), since while the RPG I'm building is meant to be used inside my webcomic, it is not intended to be exclusive to my webcomic. As in, I'd love to see others using the RPG system I built and playing games in it. Far easier to do with a page devoted to it, eh?

Beyond the RPG...there are some things which would be a little difficult to describe as well. The comic takes place on a whole entire fictional world I created, which I've only begun to explore a couple of continents of. Imagine if all you knew of Earth was limited to Australia and Europe, and you can get an idea of the scale of what I know compared to what is there.

Plus, there's one more factor which is why I kinda need the extra page. *points to number of released comics and last release date* There's very little for the comic to convey at the time. :P (This also means that while I certainly would hope I'm not going to, it's fully possible that without a page describing the plot, I'd forget about key details somewhere down the line.)

So that's why I need a page detailing the setting and plot. But beyond that, my pages DO serve as the behind-the-scenes stuff as well, in that the inspiration (and to some extent, I suppose the About page) page describes the inspiration, how the comic was made, how the setting has changed...those are all things which have to go somewhere, and it'd either be massive author's comments on multiple pages, one ore multiple blogs, or (as I have done, as it's somewhat more efficient) an extra page.

But to some extent, I'd agree for the average comic-maker. Since my world and my comic are somewhat...unusual...in that regard (really, who makes their own RPG from scratch? Who has so much content on a comic which has barely updated and which last updated two years ago? Well..... :P), my extra pages are of course going to be somewhat unusual.

What I WOULD recommend, then, would be something more like this:

-Characters Page. I described it in another thread, and basically, it boils down to a quick description of the main characters, the essential details of them and trying your best to convey who they are in a small amount.

-About Page. (Note: Since my About Page is my weakest extra page, do keep in mind...me describing the ideal About Page is my achilles heel. :P)
The FAQ section in here, answering common/anticipated questions/concerns about the comic. To me, this is basically describing the comic's summary page...only less summarized. You're not going to describe everything in here, but you're preferably going to get all the pesky details out of the way so that you don't have to constantly put them in your comic, constantly make author's notes about them, etc. (Basically, things which would come up multiple times in the comic. You typically don't need one-shot stuff in here.)

This section would also be the author bio section.
Inspiration may fall under here, or...

-Recommendations.
Links to other comics. If possible, this would be the place to put inspirations. I can name a number of webcomics which have inspired me that I'd highly recommend, and of course can also name quite a few webcomic authors who have helped me who I'd like to attribute.
And if you say that you're not the same, you're lying. :P

-Other stuff.
Most commonly, fanart.
I don't really recommend more than four extra pages, since it seems a little excessive.

It's really interesting to see how differently you guys all approach your extra pages.

I tend to only view the extra pages if it's a comic that I've been enjoying, or that I've visited a couple of times and want some extra information. It's kind of a treat to get some extra tidbits about the comic or the way it's made.

I don't have a lot of extra pages yet. :] But I am planning to have a few more.

I think generally people don't usually take the time to read extra pages unless they've already established some kind of attatchment to the comic. I personally never read blogs or view extra pages unless i'm like SO in love with the comic that i want to know where a mind like this comes from... very rare

I always read character pages before I actually start reading the comic

I'm one of those awful people who doesn't need to read extra content as I can pretty much figure out someone's whole world without having to read endless expositions and explanations.

But I like looking at extra art and who's - who.
