Well, would you look at that, pretty much confirmed physics there. Well done and congratulations to CERN.
What's everyone got to say about that then?

I had a lot to say about it.

I think I annoyed every friend on Facebook.

And they haven't necessarily found the Higgs boson. They've found a particle which seems to display the same properties of the Higgs boson.

I followed it pretty intensely, although I had to stop watching halfway through the second presentation because bloody hell that was the worst layout ever

Did y'all understand the physics? I got most of it, I think.

that's just modern science really matt, they're always cautious about saying something is something, because there's always a chance it isn't that something and they'll need to take it back.

i look forward to seeing where this discovery goes

Alright fair enough.

Also, yes what is going on with their presentations? Comic bloody Sans?

as much as i hate to say it, comic sans isn't even the worst part of that. the colour choices, the general layout and stuff... maybe they just spent all their money on the LHC and had none left for graphical designers?

well, the thing is, the deviations from the expected higgs particle could mean three things
a) experimental errors
b) a different particle
c) higgs particle has unexpected properties

both of the last two have very exciting implications

I know! I ran out of the room and vomited.
AND THE RESULT WAS OF SIMILAR APPEARANCE TO THE SLIDESHOW

e: I can't decide whether the best bit was the randomly inserted bullet points, the yellow text on red background, or the fact that every colour in it was taken from the default palette of powerpoint 97

You're probably right they probably went "well if we can discover fundamentally important new particles we can put a Powerpoint together... now, let's see... do any of our super-mega-science-computers have Powerpoint on them?" "Ummm, I think some of the old ones from when we found antihydrogen might..." "right! let's do this" (it's a wonder they didn't pepper it with random animated gifs and this bit of clipart:
image!)

Random GIFs would have made it better.
But I was legitimately surprised it didn't make that "pchoooom" sound effect every time she changed slides.

I like how my thread about science has become a thread about how scientists can't make Powepoints (Twitter, by the way, has the following trends: #Higgs, #CERN, God Particle, Comic Sans )

well, get it back on topic

What do you reckon the implications of this could be? It's not exactly a confirmation of the standard model.

If the higgs boson is properly proven in further experiments, maybe it could lead to a unification of relativity and quantum theory? After all, the higgs deals with mass, and so does gravity.

Now, that certainly would be interesting.

Apparently there are several kinds of possible Higgs Boson which means more science fiddling, I'm also quite intrigued by these ideas about extra dimensions, dark matter, antimatter and stuff- I like it when real science sounds like something out of science-fiction

Also today's physics lecture completely off syllabus- "Particle Phyics Party"- lecturer visibly excited apparently she's now gone to "party with the physicists"

Give 'em a little bit of credit. It might be that the font choice was based on standards of one of those alternate universes they'll be announcing they discovered. It might be that in our sister universe, comic sans is the pinnacle of design. I mean... we're talking about science that has the potential to rewrite our understanding of the way the universe works, right? It could happen.

Big deal! I've found the Higgs boson particle hiding in my bathroom many times, and he makes one hell of a mass too!

they are scientists. SCIENCE has no time for presentations. i they wanted they could use Wingdings, so what you prefer. comic sans or wingdings?

Is that seriously part of the actual presentation from the actual CERN physicists? I thought it was a 4chan or Reddit summary by a poster or something.

While looking for the articles about this breakthru (just speculated about in an article a few days prior when the smaller collider shut down), I saw another article in which astronomers found a giant dark matter filament between 2 galaxies. Actual physical evidence of dark matter which was previously entirely theoretical! My word, my SCIENCE sense can't take this much excitement in 1 morning.

Not entirely. They've previously detected abnormalities in gravitational lensing which have been attributed to dark matter clusters, and are evidence towards it.

But it's still crazy exciting! :D
