Hello everyone. I would like to ask for some /critiques/comments on my comic, Witches Tea Party. Well...I suppose I can't say it's a comic per-say, but honestly...I don't know what to call it exactly. So far, I've called it a "Gag-a-Day" comic style, considering I've been posting a "comic" each day (minus weekends) and so far... I'm still unsure of where I'm going. Since I posted 7 full "comics" thus far, I was hoping to get some advice on the matter.

To explain a bit about my comic, the comic uses sprites from the PS3 version of the game/visual novel, Umineko no Naku Koro ni (When the Seagulls Cry.) Umineko is a visual novel, or rather, a sound novel. With that in mind, I wanted to keep the style of a visual novel, though the conversations that are in my comic are like a standard RPG I guess. The first two "comics" are what I guess you could call "pilot" comics, since they were made with the "Gag-a-day" thought in mind. The comics afterwards are like a full story of sorts. Since I'm thinking of making a different story each week, this week is generally a story of a day in Lucifer's life.

Well...I don't know what else to put, so please give me some advice. Thank you.

I'm a big fan of Umineko but I found it simply unreadable. Not because of your writing, but because each page only has a single line of dialogue and it's impossible to really read whilst having to keep clicking the Next button every few seconds.
I can't say I advocate using the stylings of a visual novel either because as it completely disregards all the advantages of webcomics as a medium (Whilst simultaneously losing the advantages that visual novels have, like sound effects and music), but if you must, at least put multiple panels on each page.

I find this style of comic pretty strange, honestly. And this is coming from someone who likes (or used to like) visual novels. While Visual Novels do require you to click an obscene number of times to get to the end, it's at least seamless and there's some nice transitional effects/sound effects that go with it. However, in this format, unless you have a very high-speed ISP, you have to deal with loading times between clicks, making this format especially hard to sit through. Putting a visual novel online like this is a terrible disadvantage.

I have to wonder, why not make this a straight-up visual novel instead of uploading it on a comic site? There are a number of visual novel tools/creators on the internet, and they're not terribly hard to use once you get the hang of the coding.

For the first several comics, I did use a single line per page, something similar to what you'd see in a RPG, though later I did start putting multiple lines for multiple characters. I found that putting multiple lines is suitable, and less pages too.

Considering Umineko being a sound novel, I knew I'd lose that advantage right off the bat, though I do appreciate your critique and thank you.
I'll try and see how putting two or three panels on a page will look on next week's comic.

I honestly can't say if I can call this a comic. I am aware that I'm losing the advantage of a visual novel, considering Umineko is a more of a sound novel (according to the creators) and I can't really capitalize on that element.

I didn't know that they had visual novel tools/creators... I'm always surprised by the things people make... Would you have any suggestions in regards to those programs? I'll look into those when I get the chance.

Ren'Py is the visual novel engine I messed with the most. It uses the Python coding language, but the Ren'Py site does a really good job teaching how it works and how you don't need to learn a whole lot to build whole visual novels. It has a learning curve, but if you give it a week of your attention, you can start coding visual novels in no time. You can also find and play other visual novels that people made from that site.

If you're familiar with Flash, you can also code entire visual novels using Flash 8/Adobe Flash. A good chunk of flash-based visual novels exist on Newgrounds and deviantArt. Here's a pretty prolific deviantArt one. The nice thing about Flash is that it's a lot easier to post around.

There used to be a visual novel engine called Blade, but the website is suspended. I heard it's pretty good too, you might find copies of the engine floating around the internet, but there's very little support for it now.

Hope it all helps!
