By now I'm sure most of you have heard of this, but it strikes pretty close to home for me. I've been to that theater on several occasions, and I have at least one friend who usually goes to that theater and was originally planning on going to a midnight showing. Fortunately he changed his plans.

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people?

For some reason the link to the story isn't working, but honestly... go to any news site and it will be the main story.

I want to know what his motive was... I know it's going to be stupid and insane, but I want to know what it is anyway :/

My dad mentioned it to me this morning and it really surprised me. From the sounds of it, he was dressed a bit like the villain Bane. On a related note, on the news last night it was mentioned that tickets to the first showings were going for hundreds of dollars on eBay. It makes me wonder if it's some insane fan who couldn't get in to the first showing and was angry. Sadly, people have done worse for smaller things than that, so it's always a possibility.

On that note, I read that the Paris premiere was canceled.

I just heard about it. I can't stand it when these types of shootings happen. Everything is wrong. This isn't supposed to be like this. They just wanted to enjoy this much awaited movie. Now the entire country will have this one bad memory of this movie everyone was looking forward to so much. It's not fair. I hope all the wounded ones survive. Everyone pray for them. This is a tragedy.

The first thought I had when I heard about it?

Some people...just aren't right in the head.

But, yeah. From the sounds of it, he was really screwed up. Booby-trapping his home? Doing what he did? And then after all of that, not offering any resistance?

Yeah. One of the two things I wanted to know was the same as you--what kind of insane motive did he have? The other? How the heck did he actually pull it off? I thought (thanks to things similar to this having happened many times before, and people taking steps to prevent it from happening again) this kind of thing had become nearly impossible to do. Guess not. :/

The thing is, even with the security we have at some places, there is almost no security in most places. I took the train to and from college, this was not long after 9/11 and was amazed that you can just walk on the train with no security check, without even needing a ticket. There is no security really at all.

Think about your movie theater, they probably wouldn't think twice if you were wearing a coat that something could possibly concealed under. People can do terrible things if they want to.

That is no to take away from how completely messed up what this guy did. The whole situation is just so terrible.

this is a good thing. These freak occurences happen. Searching your bags and invading your privacy every time you take a train isn't going to stop them. It's just going to make you feel better while offering virtually no improvement, and wasting a huge amount of money and time.

If someone is gonna open fire to a group of random people, they're not going to be stopped by not being able to do it in the subway. If anything it's about gun control.

I do agree. Even if you think about airport security which is over the top strict, people can still get passed security with possibly dangerous things and meanwhile everyone else must take longer to be checked. To try to add sort of similar security system to trains would be basically impossibly given how they are set up.

I saw the first reports on twitter after i got home from the movie at like 4am. This whole thing also hit really close to home for me. Not in the sense that I live nearby, but when i was 13 a man walked into the church i went to and opened fire at a youth rally i was attending. 7 people were killed and 7 were injured. In comparison to this, we were super lucky. But this situation is literally my worst nightmare. ever since then, I try to know where every exit is anywhere i'm at. Reading this this morning caused me to have a slight panic attack. Its just so unreal and so unnecessary.

But I too am seriously curious as to his motives. The guy that walked into our church offed himself, and left no notes or anything. It was like he just randomly chose our church. I wonder why this guy did it. They have him in custody, I wonder if he'll even try to rationalize it.

Geez, first I heard of this. If he didn't like the movie, he could've just blogged about it. Was he in some sorta jackass competition to see how many people he could make feel bad?! Just complete crap.

Urgh. I guess this means it's true. I thought this was a sick joke when I first heard it ten minutes ago in an email. God lord, what's wrong with people?

Geez that's crazy. *hugs*

Just found out about this shooting, they were busy on the radio today talking about one that happened in Toronto instead.

The witnesses that talked with CNN, ABC, etc. were saying that they thought that he was some sort of stunt person or something before he opened fire on the theater.

Then they found out that the guy had set up an elaborate booby trap out of wires and 1-liter pop bottles, and that there were incendiary and chemical aspects to the whole thing.

The guy apparently had dropped out of med school recently, which understandably made him mad. But mad enough to make an elaborate bomb that could take days to put out and then go to a movie theater to start shooting people at a big movie premiere, is psychotic.

Last I had heard, it appeared he wasn't part of a terrorist group or anything like that, but because people are scared about going to the movie now, the movie theaters all over the country are putting in beefed up security, and I heard that in New York, every screening of the Dark Knight Rises at every theater in the city will have two uniformed police officers at every screening in case someone is trying to be a copy cat or God forbid the killer (sorry, I forget his name) actually is part of a domestic terror group.

DouglasKills:Just read on CNN on that he told police he was the Joker....

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday that the alleged gunman in the attack on a packed theater in Colorado identified himself as Batman’s arch-enemy “The Joker” after he sprayed bullets into a midnight showing of “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.”
“He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman,” Kelly said at a news conference in which he said security at New York City theaters was being increased.

So Ray Kelly said that the killer (I refuse to give him any more notoriety than he's already got) identified himself as "the Joker" but I haven't found that verified anywhere else. Also, if the guy thought he was the Joker, or wanted to be the Joker, you'd think he'd get the hair color right. So I don't buy that story, but hey... the guy is clearly a fucking psychopath, so what do I know.

Some research seems to indicate that psychopaths have developmental deficiencies in their frontal lobes, with MRI scans similar to those with head injuries. This might possibly result in reduced or absent feelings of empathy and guilt. In fact, concussions in American football have been suspected to cause psychotic behavior in certain players. Surprisingly, the killer in this movie case was a med student with no history of violence. So, his brain impairment may have occurred as a result of head injuries, genetics, (un)expected side-effects of prescription meds, illegal use of hardcore drugs, alcohol abuse, or severe lack of nurturing as an infant (which is doubtful since he seemed to have a nice suburban childhood, but sadly still possible). The tragic irony of this case is that he was a student of neurology.

Curiously, with the killer calling himself the Joker (allegedly), and his father being summoned to Colorado with police escort, I'm reminded of the scene where Heath Ledger's Joker was talking about his dad threatening him as a child, saying, "Why so serious?" The Joker was so duplicitous, one couldn't be sure if his story of child abuse was true or not.
