No, I'm not talking about Project Wonderful, Webcomic Lists, fanart, social networking sites, webcomic forums, or DeviantArt. There's a million threads on such promotional methods. : ) What are some **unusual** ways you promoted your webcomic? For example, has anyone had any luck promoting locally (outside the internetz), IRL, or through any unusual/surprising internet sites or forums? Radio? Flyers? Business cards? Halftime commercial? Did your mom tell all her friends how great your comic was? Any hilarious/disturbing/inspirational tales about your unusual promotion methods? Do tell!

I don't think it's unusual, but me and my 2 cousins dressed up as Nothing Fits characters and handed out flyers at a con.

I don't think it was overly successful. Got a few more hits. It was hard handing them out to people cause people don't like taking flyers.

I think we've done better just by inviting people to the facebook group really. Maybe it's because if you give someone something in real life about a online thing, they are less likely to take the time to check it out, while if you see the link online then you'll just click it and look then.

I tried using a panel of my comic as a spray in TF2 for free advertising but the res wasn't good enough for the link at the bottom to show.

I actually posted some ads for my comics in the artist section on Craigslist. I did get quite a few hits off it...possibly creepers. Who knows? XD

I advertise mine to people who watch me draw in class. 0.0

...I really should put the web link in front of one of my pics.

I did this! Skrael designed me a TOGM logo spray with transparencies, so I basically went around labelling various things with it and taking screenshots :D

Since my comic, The Blonde Marvel is a sexy "adults only" comic, I've promoted it on a few adult forums, particularly ones that have threads that invite readers to contribute art.

I took the first six pages of Crawlers into a little zine (two pieces of paper folded in half) and left them at the local game stores. When I used to draw a zine comic, I would ask the comic store owners to drop a few in as freebies with people's subscriptions. One year at Wizard I gave out trail mix.
When I have time I'm going to try and get on a local RPG podcast.

It's nothing unusual, but I'm going to a con in August and I'm planning on handing out cards. I actually have at least 5 other people roped into doing this with me. [I'm going to owe them big time after this, heh...]

Ooh this sounds brilliant! I've never used craigslist before, but inspired by this I took a shot at posting a craigslist ad for my webcomic. Hopefully I did it right! :o

Cool! That's how I went about it. One of my comics takes place in the Boston area so I posted it on the Boston Art Craigslist. Nice post!

Thanks! The listing lasts a week, so I guess I should try to remember to renew it every week or two. Now to see if it gets me any traffic! I did have someone link to me from their craigslist ad once (they were looking for someone to make them a webcomic site, and used mine as an example :o), and that did get an appreciable amount of traffic to the site, so hopefully this will, too. Thanks for the idea!

I did a nude puppet show on Twitter once.

I gave away ridiculous amounts chocolate as part of a really difficult guessing contest. (On a crazy note, the winner got a job as a chocolate reviewer.)

I hula hooped while making caricatures to attract people to my table at a few cons.

I made a personality quiz (I posted it in another thread in Shameless Advertisement, cause that's what it is.) People really responded well to it and it did draw some readers. Does anyone else have a personality quiz for their webcomic?

I haven't. Do you still have the quiz online. I am actually really interested to see how you implemented that.

I made small stickers and business cards with a small pic and the comic name and URL on them, and whenever I go to some new place, like another town or something, I leave them somewhere, so someone might pick it up and check it out out of curiousity.

It's definitely not a way to get a lot of any hits, in fact I don't expect anyone to pick it up. But how cool would it be if someone did/to find a note like that and find a shitty hopefully good comic?
