...impromptu staff meeting...

okay so, there are roughly 2000 webcomics on this site alone.
there are SLIGHTLY less members, meaning there are almost enough readers as comics there are to read. nearly a 1:1 ratio.

subtract the ones that are popular and still over 1500 remain.

webcomicslist is over 15,000 in strength....

on that note, let's shoot some points:

POINT A: in order for a webcomic to suceed in reaching internet fame it must first stand out. Then, it must excel in whichever genre it's apart of.

POINT B: just like a plant requires water, webcomics need heavy promotion and consistency that keeps readers intrested in order to grow.

POINT C: when the creator of a webcomic decides his initial reasons for uploading a comic are no longer important, he scraps the project.

an empty vessel remains nothing more than an abandoned spot on the net.

no viewers, no subscribers... just an idea that 'could've been'.

all that remains is a cartoonist with a slight blemish of failure etched into his past.

amidst these numbers, stats and fact, i remain confident in my own ability to convey messages through my artistic talent.
on the other hand, advertising is an issue i have yet to confront.

Simple as it may seem, advertising on Facebook won't be my primary means. There are just far too many ads already plaging the site for it to be an EFFECTIVE 'billboard' for a comic.

what are some unique and effective methods of advertising you use?

P.S: two shots of vodka down the hatch! some dildomouth wearing "jorts" just walked into the room...ffffffuuuuu

A lot of people here use projectwonderful.

Personally, I like to network. It's selfish to say but being nice gets you places - I mean that's not why I'm nice, I sincerely like taking an interest in people. But it does have its benefits.

Other than that, I blackmail my friends into reading. *ahem*

EDIT - As for Facebook, I don't use it to advertise. Instead I use it similar to an RSS feed. The only way you'll see my comic on FB is if you become a fan, I won't plug my link to my friends. So posts on FB become reminders rather than advertisements.

I think starting out, when you're just getting your feet under you, the best thing you can do is just talk to people. A lot. Tell them about it, be excited and share the excitement. Don't just "cast it out there" with a banner or a forum post and sit back and wait for the readers to come banging at your door. Engage people. I don't think it's a coincidence that some of the comics in the top 5 on ComicFury are owned by familiar faces on these forums. Hell, my comic's gotten hordes of attention after one page, and as much as I'd like to claim it was all my mad cartooning skills, I know that my almost obsessive compulsive need to socialize and share/discuss my comic ideas probably attracted a lot of attention to it before that page went up.

People are more likely to go to your comic if they like you, or if it's suggested by somebody who they like. Share your comic with friends, family, co-workers, classmates, whoever might be interested. And again, make sure you share that excitement -- people are more likely to take your project seriously if they see it's important to you. Only once you convince somebody to look at your page do your skills as an artist, comedian, or storyteller become relevant in maintaining an audience.

I tried Facebook too, and I gotta tell you, the response was underwhelming. Facebook is essentially useless for advertising at this point, unless you're willing to scream hysterically for attention within earshot of every vague acquaintance you've ever had, and that's just as likely to turn people off as pique their interest. But Facebook is pretty generic -- why not try other online communities that may be more relevant? I intend to begin advertising Noose on another forum within the next few days, dedicated to the art scene in the city where I attended school.

Anyway, this is what I'd suggest starting out, and it's a good way to gauge wider interest. Think of it like a scale model. If your own friends and family won't commit to your comic, you're probably not going to have a lot of luck with widespread appeal, and should be looking for feedback on how to improve that. If people within arm's reach seem to enjoy your comic, then you may want to start using services like Project Wonderful to advertise to a wider market.

Anyway, sorry for the long post! I've put a fair bit of thought into this. In summary, my advice is pretty much the same as Linden's. Network (especially here in ComicFury) and bug your friends. Most importantly, be excited, and be willing to share that excitement.

Honestly you guys are lucky I ever shut up about Noose at all.

All excellent points but the more pressing matter is: DUDE. I didn't know Noose finally went up. FUCK YES.

Oh uhm. Yes, it did! I hope you enjoy it! :D

It just struck me as funny how little text I actually have planned in my currently thumbnailed pages, given how goddamn chatty I am the rest of the time.

@Linden: Yes, absolutely. Like we both said, you have to make people LIKE you to make them want to read your comic! Just jamming it in people's faces every five seconds and screaming "READ THIS" will just make them resent it, and then they're not only going to not read your comic, they're going to actively discourage other people from reading it too.

I was gonna suggest something, but Noose has 23 subscribers.
WITH ONLY 2 COMICS. So you better listen to what BishopFrenzy has to say.

(Take that as a compliment BishopFrenzy! I might have 68 subscribers, but look at the # of comics it took me to get that much!)

Oh, by the way,

Thank both of you for the advice! I have...a few ideas to gain appeal for the comic. For now though I really just wanted to hear what everyone had to say about advertising. Trust me, I'm jotting down notes.

Im fortunate enough to have an entire collection of images waiting to be uploaded. Though I have been effective in advertising with some businesses in the past (numerous logo designs and a funny t-shirt) as well as social networking, I think it would be best to wait until around page ten before I really hit the forums.

The benefits of advertising a more visually stimulating, and deeply engaging comic far outweigh any anticipation I can build at this moment. That being said, I still be around on the forums.

Until I have a solid product to sell I've got nothing....buuuut I'll be around :)

I can't recommend enough spending time on the ComicFury forums! The folks here aren't just a pool of potential readers, but a valuable resource for feedback, support and encouragement. Even if you're not ready yet to actively advertise your comic, just developing a positive presence here will benefit you in tons of ways!

And thanks 2G, I really do love Noose and want it to succeed, so I've put a lot of thought and effort into this, even if it is just the one page so far! (The second one is drawn you guys I just gotta colour itttt!!)

We do it out of love, 2G. :]

On-topic: Wishing you good luck with your endeavor, OrigamiNinja! So far, the two before us managed to eloquently express what I would have wanted to say but without the awkward and hesitant blurbs of uncertainty. If you're interested, there are about two more threads with a nigh similar topic as this thread that you can check out. There are good advice in there too. ^^

I like spending time on the forums here on ComicFury, and on Monday & Thursday I do hit the "Shameless plug" thread and inform people that the new Angry Faerie is up. However I don't try to spam the forums incessantly (unless you count the link in my sig, but I don't think it should be counted that way).

Other things I do to promote Angry Faerie: I post it as a journal entry on Monday & Thursday over on my deviantart page, though I'm not sure how much traffic that generates. I do post the link to my facebook status most Mondays & thursdays as well. I know I got at least one regular reader that way.

I just signed up over at comicspace.com as well, so I'll probably be posting my strips a week behind over there and occasionally posting a bulletin plugging the comic over there.

I'm definitely considering Project Wonderful.

Over at the Panel & Pixel forum, I've added my webcomic as a link in my sig as well. Will probably do that for my sig on the Whitechapel forum.
