Hey folks. There's been a lot of updates to the forum rules!

Here are the forum rules. The number of rules has been reduced from 18 to 9, so you can commit them all to memory or put them on flash cards or whatever it is you do.

There are also new rules for Forum Games, Introductions, and Shameless Advertisement.

If you've got questions or comments about any of these rule changes, post them in this thread.

Oh yeah almost forgot to ask
What makes someone an active member exactly? Posting in such and such a time frame?

I honestly think not, that thing is unreadable at that degree.

Hosting a comic or having 30 or more posts that are reasonably recent I think

Forum Rules:1. No insults, harassment, bigotry, slurs, or abuse.

2. No memes, image macros, chat speak, or typing quirks.

3. Spoiler content that people may not want to see. This includes: NSFW content, triggering content, and overly distracting images.

4. No drive-by posting. Read threads before posting in them.

5. Don't make pointless posts or threads. This includes posts that only contain "I agree" or similar, and posts that only contain quotes.

6. Don't derail threads. Stay on-topic.

7. No animation in signatures or avatars.

8. No advertising your webcomic outside of Shameless Advertisement.

9. No illegal, excessively gory, or pornographic content.

Does this mean the no bumping old threads rule is gone? We can bump old threads now?

Re rule 9 - I don't think I've ever seen gore on this site. Either it's just unpopular or the line is set very knitting circle friendly.
Amputation videos, yes or no?
Drawn and forum posted page content seems to much more lax.

Merged Doublepost:

Seabiscuit:Oh yeah almost forgot to ask

I think it means forum active as having a comic hosted here is specifically mentioned also. Exactly how active is active, mods normally don't like making public such things whether or not an actual number is set. I can think of a few reasons for this.

Mo, you fall under the bus Grandparent Clause; Squatter's Rights. The rules don't apply to you.
But what about Rule 10: don't dismiss other people's feelz.
How can this be CF without group hugs and forehead kisses?!

For a few months now, happened some time in 2015

Also note that while those 9 rules cover the general forum that there are separate additional rules for different areas of the forum. Bumping is covered in the advertising section fairly clearly

Well, that's for advertising, and sounds like it's only specific to the advertising section. The bumping rule is a rule that's kind of covers the entire forum. It should still be talked about in the general forum rules, unless omitted because of a reason.

Simplifying things so that the rules are clearer.

Reaper Dragon:Number 9 - the law of where?

And
(Spoilered for possible rule breaking) edited.

I don't understand what your first line means, but nice catch with the zalgo - that's still not allowed, so I've amended the rules.

Seabiscuit:Oh yeah almost forgot to ask
What makes someone an active member exactly? Posting in such and such a time frame?

I kiiiinda don't want to make it a super strict thing, like "you must have so-and-so posts" or whatever, because I don't want people to feel like there's a barrier that they need to surpass in terms of post frequency. This is pretty much the only rule on the site that involves post frequency. I'm not even sure it's just frequency; I can think of people I consider active who don't post all that much. And from experience, the kinds of ad threads you get varies a lot... if someone is relatively new and advertising their kickstarter, that's pretty harmless, and on the other end of things, some people make accounts solely to promote their websites or whatever.

But maybe it should be super clear and strict. Do you have suggestions for what an active member might be? Nama's reply to you is what the rule was before, but also that was set in 2009.

ProRevolution128:Does this mean the no bumping old threads rule is gone? We can bump old threads now?

Nope. We're going to make threads automatically lock after a while, and then the rule will be gone. Fair point, though; the rules should reflect the current state of things. Added a rule.

moizmad:Rules? There are rules?

Apparently!

Reaper Dragon:Re rule 9 - I don't think I've ever seen gore on this site. Either it's just unpopular or the line is set very knitting circle friendly.

Maybe it's 'cause there's a rule. :D

Amputation videos, yes or no?

Contextually? This seems weirdly specific.

Drawn and forum posted page content seems to much more lax.

Yeah, we're a bit more lax on art. The general idea here is "use your discretion" when it comes to what "gore" means - a little is fine (spoiler it), a lot is not.

I think it means forum active as having a comic hosted here is specifically mentioned also. Exactly how active is active, mods normally don't like making public such things whether or not an actual number is set. I can think of a few reasons for this.

What're your reasons, out of curiosity?

The Letter M:How long have animated avatars been banned?

Since 2013, and possibly earlier.

rokulily:Also note that while those 9 rules cover the general forum that there are separate additional rules for different areas of the forum. Bumping is covered in the advertising section fairly clearly

I think the question was about bumping really old threads, not ad threads, though you're right that the ad thread bumping rule is pretty clear in the ad rules.

it used to be "no distracting animation" but that was pretty ambiguously open to interpretation. any animation can be considered annoying/distracting, so i assume that's why it was updated for better clarity.

so, technically a while, but the updated rule makes more sense now.

So what happens when massive giants like the Pictures of You thread goes over the limit (I'm assuming it's a month like usual)? It has had spans where no one posted in a couple days over thirty, only to be revived later to carry on its legacy.

if it isn't mentioned it isn't a rule anymore, sans abuse in which no doubt it'll make a comeback. it still applies in the advertising forum though as mentioned.

the rules are dead, love live the rules

if a thread is auto-locked due to age (rather than mod intervention), a new thread could be created.
