Ken Cohen:Alright. Mint, boxed Sega Genesis or used PlayStation 2 Slim? They're the same price.

Up to you, really, but if you already had a Genesis but not a PS2, then take the PS2 Slim. You can play all your PSOne games on there. :)

If not, well, its your call. Just do what I do. Flip a coin.

Regardless of the outcome, you'll know which you want by the time the coin lands. ^.^

Well, the boxed Genesis was sold, so now it's just between a used Genesis or a used PS2 slim. I don't have a Genesis, which is one of my great shames as a game "collector." Then again, as my PlayStation is now broken, I have a bunch of games that I can't play...

PS2. Jesus Christ, stop playing lousy old games.
And no cost is not a factor because that PS2 plays PS1 games which are dirt cheap now.
And there are certain PS2 games (which are also cheap now) that a man just has to play.

"Lousy?"
I'll skip the nerd rage and just say that I was going to get the Sega Genesis until I went to the store and found that it had already sold. I suppose I'll pick up the PS2... eventually. Really, the only thing that machine has going for me is the fact that it can play PS1 games, as my PS1 broke, and I've heard good things about Dragon Quest VIII.

Yeah, lousy.

And I did play my NES to death. The machines I owned were ATARI 2600 (beat that), NES, SNES, Sega Saturn, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, PS3. I've also played some X-box, XB360, and Wii games.

Ok, ofc there are some gems on the NES and Genesis. But, I see you constantly talking about obscure old games that are NOT gems, or even just outright garbage games. It seemed like you play them just because they exist on an old system.

Shadows of the Colussus, anyone? Or Resident Evil 4. But most of them you can now buy in HD for PS3 online.

I've played on an original Pong set. Does that count? I don't still have it, but my dad might somewhere. It was kinda his. :)

I also had the privilege (a dubious one, at that) of briefly owning (for around three weeks) an Action Max console. Kudos if anyone knows what the hell that is without searching the internet.

But...but that's Ken's whole MO! It's not good for him unless it's at least fifteen years old!

RE4 is also available in HD on Xbox Live. And to my knowledge they have not yet been knocked out for an extended period of time and my personal information leaked. <3

I can't let Sony live that one down just yet...

My dad ran a toy store, so I was there when he unveiled the original Pong set in the store in front of a crowd, heheh. He never did let me touch it; I just got to watch.

No, there are really no excuses for that. But I've stuck with Sony so far, so I didn't wanna just switch over the moment something went wrong. Xbox has had it's hiccups, too.

I'm still playing Fallout: New Vegas, going through "The Divide" DLC quest. Boy, that voice actor is truly intense!

Ken Cohen:I've heard good things about Dragon Quest VIII.

That game is definitely a HUGE one that needs to be played. GREAT jrpg! And with a PS2, you'll be able to get on with your Final Fantasy 7 game ;)

Only... from the other side of the coin? ;P

I will agree with you about certain PS2 games being a must though. Dragon Quest VIII definitely being one of them :)

Opinions. I happen to quite enjoy those old games, especially SNES jRPGs. I don't think there will ever be an era of gaming as creative as the 16-bit generation.

seriously, most people don't seem to realize it, but this is kinda a golden age of gaming right now and it is only going to get better (for a while anyway.)

^What Capps said. While some of the best games that have ever been made come from far earlier times (i.e. Majora's Mask, Chrono Trigger, Morrowind, Nethack) this is a really fucking awesome time for video games. Honestly, the majority of the older video games don't really compare to many of the games coming out right now, again with the exception of aforementioned masterpieces. From Bastion to Starcraft 2 to Dark Souls to Diablo 3 to Dota 2 to Noitu Love 2 to those pretty good batman games to The Witcher to Cave Story to Skyrim to Mass Effect to the new fallout games to Metal Gear Solid to modern sonic games that are actually good to all the humble bundles and even more games than those, things are pretty awesome right now. I couldn't be happier with the number of quality games coming out at this point in time.

I think the real reason Ken is clinging to the past as he is is because there isn't a particularly huge quantity of new quality JRPGs, which seems to be his favorite genre. That's all fine and well, but honestly, this point in time of games couldn't be any better in terms of the quality of the games (the means through which they are distributed is a different matter, but it's getting better. There's still the issue of bullshit dlc, but meh).

Rehash shooter after rehash shooter, and then ONE company making good games? A golden age?

There are some good games, but the majority of games on the market are rehashes of older games. Business practices are also going downhill: DLC, the horribly expensive games and consoles, and now used games are being targeted. I really don't think I have to do much more than name EA, Capcom, Square Enix. The sad thing is that Squaresoft and Enix, inc. used to make great games. Most games are sequels or rehashes of previous games. Most games are first-person shooters. The consoles have very few differences. Say what you will about how which console has better graphics and sound, etc. etc., but there are very few exclusives worth noting. It just comes down to Uncharted and Halo. XBox 360 and PS3 are, in terms of game libraries, nearly identical, and the Wii is a shovelware dump to rival the CD-i. As for the 16-bit generation, the SNES and Genesis had a great variety of different games, not just shooters and shooters and shooters. The SNES and Genesis were genuinely different, too. The SNES had great RPGs and the great Nintendo franchises, and the Genesis had great action games.

Alright, I suppose liking rehash shooters isn't bad, but honestly, this is far from a golden age. Valve is great, yes, and Portal is one of my top five, but ONE game that can compete with the 16-bit greats of old? Far from a golden age.

Yeah, who needs "Chrono Trigger", or "Shadow of the Colossus", when we have "Duke Nukem Forever", and "Bald Guy Shooting Arabs Behind Cover 12"?

I think I might have just wasted a paragraph... This is a great response, and really sums up what's wrong with this generation.
Also, is it worth seeking out Chrono Cross?

Duke Nukem Forever is one bad game. There were bad games in the past, and they actually tended to be a lot worse.

Also to claim every single video game out there is a cover base shooter is pretty silly. There is much more out there besides that, and you know it.

And finally take the crappy cover shooters of today, and compare them to the crappy NES platformers. I think you will find the first more bearable and playable.

e: I didn't even saw ken's post till now. I already made a post that showed there is more variety then just shooters on the console.

You might as well have. You're basically saying, "Forget the old games, modern games are the best!" You make a statement, you stand by it and accept its connotations.

Mr. Capps:

Duke Nukem Forever is one bad game. There were bad games in the past, and in fact they tended to be a bit worse.

He was using them as examples. They're basically prime examples of what most modern games are like.

Mr. Capps:

Most games coming out are shooters. Most popular games are shooters. There's very little variety.

Mr. Capps:
And finally take the crappy cover shooters of today, and compare them to the crappy NES platformers. I think you will find the first more bearable and playable.

That's really ignorant, and you know it. Play Call of Duty, a shooter which most people consider good, after playing Little Nemo, Kiwi Kraze, or even McKids, which are all bad examples, then get back to me on that. There are some "crappy" NES platformers, but even those are better than today's horrible shooters.

I played Chrono Cross for some time but I got bored with it before the end of CD1 and quit. The characters, the setting and the plot proved too uninteresting to continue. I would say that give it a go and see for yourself but if you absolutely insist on getting a physical copy, don't pay much.
