I was talking to kyo a while back about paper rad and other animators and thought "Hey, we're arguably a community of artists, I bet you guys would have some cool views on stuff like this!" So here's a thread to post about non-comics related visual arts or whatever.
Here are some dudes I think are pretty cool:

Paper Rad!
wikipedia:Paper Rad is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania/Providence, Rhode Island art collective that makes comics, zines, video art, net art, MIDI files, paintings, installations, and are in a variety of bands. The three primary members are Jacob Ciocci, Jessica Ciocci, and Ben Jones.

Inventors of the DOGMAN 99 aesthetic, which prohibits things like Wacom tablets, scanning, non-RGB colors, and promotes fake tweening and MIDI audio. Probably more well known nowadays for Ben Jones's Kneon Knome/Problem Solverz cartoon. They've also done a lot of music videos for bands like Lightning Bolt and AIDS Wolf

Some French Guy, he makes cool pictures with sort of a 1920's-30's style. (I dunno if there's like a technical term for it, whatever :I)

Check out his website, seriously do it

I guess in retrospect I don't really know a lot about this subject, so why don't you guys come and educate us!

Damn, I had a McBess drawing as my desktop wallpaper for the longest time...

Anyway, everybody should check out Tomer Hanuka's new art book Overkill, out this Wednesday! (ok well it was probably out already, it's just being released through Diamond on Wednesday)

Super badass, right?

Also, Christian Ward. I sure wish Infinite Vacation came out faster...

Here are some active people on dA that I think are pretty exceptional. The first is a female Russian illustrator, the second a male American digital painter:

Is it time to mention LS Lowry?

image

There's a Lowry gallery in the Salford Quays and I've seen a number of his works at the Tate Liverpool.

I first found out about Lowry whilst looking through a series of London Underground posters, which means that he must've been commissioned by them at some stage to produce work for them.

And because he was a Mancunian, naturally Oasis would make a film clip in that style.

Wayne Barlowe, does amazingly detailed and awesomely designed paintings of mostly demons and stuff, which are all characters from a book he wrote, Hell's Demon, or something.

I'll dig up more accurate info and some pics later. If I can be arsed to.

There are so many artforms out there, so many different medias to choose from. So many artists, so much talent... It's difficult to narrow the field down to a few that stand out to me. I'm mostly drawn to artists that excel in stirring my emotions or evoking responses. Art has to be more than lush beauty to me, it has to contribute something. Enrich me.

Here are a few that stand out, now that I'm trying to think about it.

The first would undoubtedly be Polish artist Pawel Kuczynski. He uses paints, colored pencils and ink to create beautiful works of art that also spark thought on controversial worldwide issues. His pieces are sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, but always worth pondering.

Another that comes to mind right off the bat is Matt Wisniewski, who isn't traditionally trained as an artist but instead works as a web designer based out of New York who happens to do some amazing photo manipulation projects on the side.

His portraits (most commonly) combining beautiful women and landscapes have always stirred deep thoughts on the imagery we impose upon modern women and the unreasonable standards we hold for female beauty. Whether you're in it for the socio-political thoughts, or you just plain love the good artwork -- either way his work is worth taking the time to view.

The third artist that pops into my mind is Candy Chang. Her "artform" of choice is very outside the norm. Here in New Orleans, she got approval and assistance from the community in an art project involving the locals. She titled it "Before I Die".

She painted the entire side of an abandoned building with black chalk board paint, turning the entire side into one giant chalkboard. Using white paint she put hundreds of entries on the wall that read "Before I die:______________" and left large blanks spots. She hung little metal baskets all along the wall and filled them with sidewalk chalk. And then....she let the project run itself.

Tourists, locals and everyone inbetween came to the wall to finish a sentence. Every once in a while she'd come down and catalog the answers written up there, then wipe the board clean. Other times the rain would wipe the board for her.

Her community project was both inspirational and simple, sparking several "Before I Die" community chalkboards around the entire world.
