MatthewJA:Can you recommend a program that makes better flash animations than flash itself

Best bet would be to look around youtube at demo reels and see what programs the cool people are using these days. Chances are they're way more complex and complicated than flash however.

Toonboom springs to my mind suddenly.

Kyo:gifs itself can only have 256 different colors, so there is an intrinsic quality loss to the format. You can embed video files into flash though, so that would be an option.

Then I'd need something that can animate .avi files, so I'd be back at square one...

There are a lot of free animation programs out there, but it help a lot if you mentioned the sort of animation you intend. Also, what OS are you using?

In the meantime, check out these (not all are Flash compatible):

Vectorian Giotto

Blender

Flash Alternatives - Ultimate List of Flash-Like Animation Software (not all are free)

Free Cartoon Animation Software

FlashDevelop (open source IDE for Flash)

KToon (Linux only)

Synfig Studio

Pencil (but be prepared to do a LOT of drawing)

There are other ways to animate as well, and one of these might be of use:

Scratch

Alice

I've tried half of these, I'm a Windows user. I mainly want to animate images as if they're vector-based.

FireStarter by Coffee is a cheap .SWF file maker. It's easy to use but it doesn't have actionscripting as far as I know it is just animation. I can't find anything about it on their site anymore, but I think it's because they have replaced it with something better
Which makes sense since html 5 pretty much makes swf obsolete

Well then Vectorian Giotto would be it.

I started using it and it looks a lot like flash but I haven't had a lot of chance to play with it yet
