Best bet would be to look around youtube at demo reels and see what programs the cool people are using these days. Chances are they're way more complex and complicated than flash however.

Toonboom springs to my mind suddenly.

Then I'd need something that can animate .avi files, so I'd be back at square one...

There are a lot of free animation programs out there, but it help a lot if you mentioned the sort of animation you intend. Also, what OS are you using?

I've tried half of these, I'm a Windows user. I mainly want to animate images as if they're vector-based.

Install two windows in dual boot

1. install 30 day trial
2. use trial for 30 days
3. format windows
4. reinstall 30 days trial

FireStarter by Coffee is a cheap .SWF file maker. It's easy to use but it doesn't have actionscripting as far as I know it is just animation. I can't find anything about it on their site anymore, but I think it's because they have replaced it with something better
Which makes sense since html 5 pretty much makes swf obsolete

Well then Vectorian Giotto would be it.

I started using it and it looks a lot like flash but I haven't had a lot of chance to play with it yet
