Just as a fair warning, the story gets pretty intense at times and will touch on some things that make a lot of people very uncomfortable. If you stay with me through this whole journey, you will probably hate me before it's over. Seriously, this is not a story for children, fragile adults or cuddly tapirs.
That having been said:
To the Maya, the underworld, Xibalba (Literal translation: The Place of Fear) was a very real place. You could walk there if you were brave enough and strong enough for the journey. When you got there you would play a deadly ball game for the chance to win eternal life and glory. If you lost... well, it's best not to dwell on the thought of losing.
It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
