Comic description

Meet Candace, a friendly young lady fresh out of college! Follow along as she wages her daily battles against boredom at the office, a lazy roommate with a short fuse, and a rambunctious little pet dog. Will she come out on top with a big smile as she wins the day, or be overwhelmed by the small but relentless frustrations of everyday life? Have fun finding out.

Hello! I'm Jordan Smith, and I'd like to tell you a little about myself. I've always loved both drawing and writing. What better way to combine the two passions than comics? Much of my free time inevitably gets taken up with me sitting at the drawing board, usually working on my latest comic strip, although I occasionally will work on something else. Obviously, being human, I sometimes find myself taking time off now and then, but there are many other times where I need to get back to work and crank out multiple 'toons before I forget the latest batch of ideas that somehow formed in my mind when I least expected it (actually, I occasionally manage to dream up a strip!). I spent years submitting comics to syndicates, and probably have enough paper from rejection slips to write up my own graphic novel. I currently earn about a buck a month doing cartooning, while spending a lot more money (and time) working at it. But technically, I'm a professional cartoonist and am hoping to make some real money at it someday. I like to think that through repeated cartooning I've gotten better. I save every original cartoon I complete, but am often embarrassed to dredge up some of the older ones. You're not likely to see any of them here. Just the newer ones. Well, thanks for reading!

So I got to thinking about the ol’ “Get a room, you two” line. With a little creativity, that became human and pet cuddling in an irate roomie’s bedroom!

To me, the coloring makes this strip much more understandable. The black and white version consists of one big rectangle with stuff going on almost at random, which can disrupt the flow (not good). Realizing the mistake I made, I worked to add various colors to the background, helping divide this comic into the six panels it was intended to be. Candace’s roommate didn’t get to be as tough as she is by accident. She learned to fight because, with her relatives, she had to.

Sometimes having nothing more than two talking heads to illustrate a joke is okay, but I think dropping the roomies into a hot tub (with a generic stranger joining them) makes this cartoon much more visually interesting. In this connected age we live in, I had to give it some thought as to just how someone like Megan’s uncle could go about staying disconnected most of the time. Dumping the T.V. set is an easy and obvious first choice, but nearly everyone goes online at least once every few weeks (usually far more often), so then I needed to get creative. People often think of the apocalypse as a time of divine judgement at history’s end, or maybe a zombie attack. But I sometimes imagine it more like the entire grid going down for years (maybe forever). How many of us would last?

I guess I’m more of the You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours mentality (like Candace). Favors are common among people, and while some offer and/or take money for simple services rendered, others wave off the entire notion of money and simply expect a favor in return (whenever necessary). But Megan gave it a good try!
