Comic description

What happens when a lonely hermit vampire takes in an orphan girl and her ill tempered cat to care for? Who really cares for whom? Join Nigel, Lucy, and Malfelix in a world not unlike our own except things really do go bump in the night, but who really is the monster?

I have been a caricaturist and illustrator for many years. A long time ago I wanted to do comics for a living. As with most things, life is what happens while you are making plans. Nigel the Nosferatu is but one of many creations that my muse seeks to get me to bring to life. I hope you enjoy the journey with me.

Take care,

Kim Allman

Backgrounds are critical in establishing mood and setting. I too am weak in that area but since I realize the importance of it, I actually think that backgrounds may be more important than the characters/figures, and I have been told by professionals to draw the background first, and then the figures. This also helps to establish proper perspective and lighting.
I think it is great that you still work with traditional media, I think that digital drawings, for reasons I cannot explain, do not capture the true intent of the thoughts and feelings you are trying to draw, the "style" I guess. I just can't seem to capture 100% of my style with a Wacom tablet. I have to draw in pencil and then scan it like you to get my best work. I then feel comfortable inking my pencils with a digital pen though.

Yes, another splash page. One of the challenges of doing a web comic is that your scanner bed can dictate how large your original paper size is. I know that in Photo Shop and in Gimp (which is what I use) you can scan larger pages onto a smaller scanner and then splice the images. I just do not have the skill or the patience to do that. So I end up cutting my paper down to just a bit larger than an Eight and Half by Eleven overall with an even smaller image area space. You might notice that most of the pages to date are three panels as that appears to be what works best within the confines and limitations of the media. Of course I could go into an entire discussion of the "limitless page" such as Scott MaCloud has suggested in "Redefining Comics" but I am something of a traditionalist and find the restriction a challenge to the overall story telling.

As for this page I am happy with a number of elements except the background. Backgrounds are my least strength and I am going to explore ways to improve this as I go forth with the story. The other challenge on this page was trying to position and get the image of Lucy prone on the cobbled path behind Nigel right. The position of the head was a bear and I am still not quite completely happy with it. The flatness of Nigel's lower body is a deliberate design device. I leave it to you as to whether it works or not.
