I got through school using mostly the small wacom bamboo tablet I have had for the last hundred years. It think those still go for $60-$70.

After school I got an ancient third party drawing screen for $250, but it's moderately crappy and I'm kind of looking to upgrade eventually to one of the big ol' cintiqs the rich kids all use.

You can make any tool work for you, and you aren't going to be magically better because you have a fancier system rigged up.

Just don't buy one of those weird knock-off tablets, I hear those break all the time.

MST3KFan:Looks more like they took another movie plotline where people are "pulled into the video game/movie" and then slapped the Jumanji name on it simply to use the name to get people to go.

Exactly this. It's almost like Troll 2 or ... Mean Girls 2

10/10 would pirate again

I like that all the people defending it on youtube are basically just defending the idea of "reboots" as a storytelling choice and trying to nail down a definition of "rebooting"

GMan003:So I finished watching Code Geass and there's something I still don't understand.
What the exact fuck was Charles and Marianne's plan? What was the Ragnarok Connection actually going to do? We heard a bunch of vague stuff about how it will eliminate deception, and somehow that results in civilization stagnating, but I still don't get what the actual effect was going to be. I've scoured wikis for hours now and I still can't figure out what the actual effect was supposed to be.
Yeah..... that's the way it goes with Code Geass. It's been a bit since I saw it but like
it's sort of just a blanket excuse to blow a bunch of stuff up and like for Lelouch and Suzaku to fight.
I think a lot of people were hoping for a third season.

Merged Doublepost:

Seeen:I'm here for recommendations! Give me your best animes. I like the funnies, and also the feels-inducing epic-level quests and such. Good characterization is just, like, top-notch.

I don't like most anime, but the genre itself is something I have some appreciation for. Parts of it anyway. Pretty much any anime that does its own thing is likely to have a good deal of my favor.

Trigun

Everyone please don't hurt me Trigun is the best.
Your description makes it seem like we have similar approaches to anime.

Also seriously no one stab me or try to find my house I love trigun you can't stop me.

Who is the old where is the new with what instruments do we draw these lines in the sand!

How old do you have to be to be an original CF representative? Is there a core of CF primary users, an Indigenous A-Team of ComicFury-ers? Are they perhaps long dead?

WHO ARE THESE COMIC ELDER GODS SHOW YOURSELF! REVEAL THINE TERRIBLE DIVINE SPLENDOUR!

But seriously folks is there a way to organize generational groups of comicfurians? Like, I might consider myself a member of the second-wave school of users, I know around when I joined people were talking about this wacky influx of new users. Or maybe there are way more groups between me and the original native comicfury people groups. And where are we now, how can we classify the denizens of this fair land?

yeet yeet get the mccloud out. He also has the pyramid of iconic/realistic/abstract which is good.

To me it's sinpler if artists just draw stuff the way that they like the best for their story, and let the critics and librarians try to classify stuff. Most classifications of artistic movements and who belongs to each are made after the art in question.

I think it's a lot more productive to talk about style elements than like, wondering if one style is the same as another.

Comparing things like how an artist treats forms, as solid volumes or more graphic shapes, how they treat space on the page as a design, how much they're sticking to verism or how they're simplifying or graphically representing people and trees and spiders and stuff- that's getting into some insight about design language.

It's easy to group stuff from similar publishing markets into design "families" but like it's been said here, there's tons of divergence within these groups and overlap with works from other groups.

I think the reason manga may get this familial grouping more often than other styles is because there's a pretty strong cannon of typified "Manga-ey" design elements and tropes that get used a lot, and that we don't see so much in other publishing cannons. For example, a lot of the emanata used in manga are somewhat universally accepted and used across a range of comics that otherwise have very different styles. (A bead of sweat on the back of the head, a strained vein in the forehead, nosebleeds, the treatment of spraying blood in general for that matter, cat-faces appearing to denote subversive intent in a character, etc.)

Other publishing cannons use emanata as well, but I don't think any are as codified and drawn the same way from one comic to the next the way they are in Manga.

You could say the same thing about the way a lot of manga treats characters, facial features, backgrounds, etc. Even within different publishing groups of manga you'll find "families" of design. Strong, narrow seinen manga eyes, big, heavy lidded josei eyes, sharp features everywhere in shonen, etc. But you find that in American publishing as well. Monthly superhero comics often use heavy hatching, noir-like spot blacks, realistic facial proportions, "kids" comics use more deformed stylizations and open colors or softer shading. (ACTUALLY a lot of superhero titles are getting "cartoony" styles to go with them, although it seems that this often denotes that stories are of lighter tone or less graphic violent nature. I wonder if you could chart "Cartooniness" and "Grittiness" in drawing styles and compare it to story tones)

And the same can be said for independent comics, underground comix, stuff published in graphic novel form and meant to be distributed and read as one work, newspaper strips, etc.

I think the main reason Manga gets this treatment so often is because a lot of manga comics do share from this strong design cannon.

tl;dr I don't know much about "comics" or "manga", but I will put anything in "quotation marks" to make it sound like i'm some kind of "pretentious jackass" who knows what he's talking about.

All these are good yes yes

I've been slowly reading through hellboy and sandman and bone for the last couple years. I'm kinda weird and don't like to binge through stuff I like too fast.

I watched The Scot Pilgrim movie first and loved it a buuuuuunch so I feel like I can't fairly judge the books, but like after SPOILER FOR ACTUAL SPOILER
Ramona kind of dips out on Scott
the plot feels aimless and wander-y. JUST LIKE SCOTT OH MAN THEMATIC FRAMING

Seconds was rad

has anyone read Jeffery Brown? He does these memoir books about his life that are kind of sad and hilarious at the same times.
[Pictured: A real laugh fest about dealing with Crohn's disease and the anxieties of major surgery.]
Dear lord that image is huge.

He also does these books about darth vader and luke as father and son, and these marvelous transformer parodies. (INCREDIBLE CHANGE-BOTS)

Shipp:There's a Katamari webcomci???? And it has a book????? And it's official???? How did I not know about this????????

yahhhh namco had a site with a bunch of comic versions of their games, it was dope but they took it down. they had Katamari, and Chris Hastings and Ryan north did a Galaga comic. I'm gonna see if I can internet archive up the old site

Edit-
Here's Katamari. But for some reason, the buttons only work for me if I click open in new tab. Bizzare.

I drew a comic a hundred years ago and never finished coloring it because I am a nerd. It's really oooold now but you could draw on it some if you want. I colored about 50 pages of it and then got lazy/busy. It's a science fantasy thingy about a vagrant running from the space cops or whatever, I can pm you some pages if you're interested in seeing it.
