This might be an odd one, but Lugia's Song from the second Pokémon movie is my go-to tune whenever I want to calm myself.

Honestly wouldn't mind having it play at my funeral - if there is one piece of music that could reach me even in death, it's this one. It touches me in my soul, or something. (Which makes it very fitting that the Pokémon Silver remake was called SoulSilver)

As I've said before, ever since I joined ComicFury your work caught my eye as a standard to aim for if I ever want to upgrade my own stuff from "amateur level" to "print quality".

It's clear that you're incredibly passionate about creating, and you say you've made big life decisions to keep up with it. That tells me that this is what you have to do, not because you're contractually obliged to do so, but simply because you want to. Some petty commenter has absolutely zero right whatsoever to decide anything about your life and your decisions.

Anyway, I'm also just one random guy, but I sincerely feel like you have what it takes to achieve what you want, so... good luck!

A few years ago I lost internet access for a week. I'm not the type of person to throw a tantrum when "my internet" goes out or whatever, so I just tried to make the best of it and entertain myself in other ways.

By the time that week was over, I was almost sad that I could go online again. I had just gotten used to life without it. It was nice.

Thunderstorms help, too. They make me shut off all electronics (well, except things like the fridge) and just read a book on the couch or something. And those moments always feel peaceful and refreshing.

So although I don't actively take breaks from the internet, they are certainly healthy and can actually be enjoyable.

Oh wow, yeah, I checked that out for the first time last month. What a journey that was. Can't wait to revisit it someday once my memory of it has become less vivid.

I had a bad habit of doing this when I was around 10-12.

Pokémon? Just the new popular thing, I'm not interested.
(Randomly gives the games a try and gets hooked anyway)

Harry Potter? Just the new popular thing, I'm not interested.
(Our family gets the first movie on VHS, I end up watching it and getting hooked anyway)

GoldenEye on N64? Meh, I don't care about James Bond.
(Gets invited to play it; I end up loving the game, watching the movie and discovering my #1 favorite actor Sean Bean)

Lord of the Rings? Just the new popular thing, I'm not interested.
(I find out Sean Bean is in it and I get into it anyway (the Boromir parts at least))

Dragon Ball? Just the new popular thing, I'm not interested.
(Cousin recommends it to me and it ends up becoming my #1 favorite franchise in the world)

When you meet a Pokémon fan who mentions he's 16 years old which means you were already playing the original games BEFORE HE WAS EVEN BORN.

You know, I see plenty of artists' rage in this thread, but not artistic rage.
Fear not, however, for I am here to rectify that and unleash mine:

Leafa:I also feel like I need to improve the standard of my art, I'm always worried that it is a bit stagnant at this point, and not at a standard where I could ever be published.

Interesting; if it makes you feel better, I've always seen the quality of your work as perfectly publishable, a standard to aim for if I want to level-up my own work from its current amateur standard.

---

As for the main topic - if you are able to make a living off of something you love, then of course that is not a mistake. You do you! But if it's a struggle to make ends meet, then it's hard to say whether it's worth it. I would ask myself: does the good outweigh the bad, or is it the other way around?

Another factor to keep in mind: Turning your hobby into your job sounds great, but I've noticed I lose passion for drawing the moment it becomes something I have to do.

It's all very much a personal thing. Do what "feels right" to you, I suppose.

It should come as no surprise that Akira Toriyama is one of my all-time favorite artists. If all you've ever seen of Dragon Ball is the animated side of it, well... the manga - y'know, the product Toriyama actually drew himself - is simply on another level.

I had a hard time finding proper images for this, so I went with a video instead; one that goes into not only Toriyama's artwork, but also his page structure and panel placement and how he guides the reader's eye (you can skip to 9:50 for this).

There is so much I can (and should) still learn from that.
