Since I can't be there micro-managing my reader's consumption of The Restless Dead, I have to be ok with them theorisong and making assertions from incomplete data. So the idea does not trouble me.

I do think that when people frame it as a bleak, depressing trudge just because it has zombies that they must have not read it, or read it while projecting so hard that the WALKING dead was burned onto their monitors instead like a laser.

Jess is so impulsive and cocky she's the perfect mark for batman to take down in a humiliating way.

Hey. What does the J.K.Rowling cautionary tale bit mean? I know she has stated that Dumbledor is gay but that doesn't change too much. Is there some other disastrous extra textual information she's put out there?

I worry that my comic is too high brow and intellectual for the average consumer. I mean...these lofty concepts are going to deter the average joe. We have zombies and apocalypses.

In all honesty I worry that I will miss my update schedule and lose all my traffic constantly, and that I'll need to draw a car.

That rose truely was a cut above. ho ho ho ho.

Now. To the next challenge. This one is close to my heart. I'd like to commision you all to make blades to woo my free spirited orc maiden, Shegra.

image

I haven't been able to get her out of my head since the Orc King's Tournament. I need you all to build a fierce blade so she'll come to the forge and I'll present her favourite to her as I ask her to marry me.

Shegra fights with single handed weapons. Usually cutting and thrusting ones. I've seen her use cutlasses, curved blades, straight blades, single or double edged. She's versatile as long as it's got some meat to it. No foil or rapier here. I know she likes arming swords. It has to be something that can get through armour. Big enough to satisfy her warrior's desires but small enough that she can still wear her half shield on the other arm.

Umm. What. It's an american film through and through. They took fighting styles from Asia to explain how they could get the style of heroes they wanted to beat up rooms full of people. If the wechowski's hadn't wanted that aesthetic they would not have chosen to do that. While kung fu is chinese I don't think it's fair to say the Matrix doesn't count because it's Asian inspired...and even then. It wasn't some outlier. It was a game changer. Urban, sleek action became the norm and grizzled, buff, middle aged guys slipped out of popularity. Will Smith, Keanu Reeves Tom Cruise, Leonardo Decaprio, Brad pitt. All of these leaner guys. If they do fights it's about dexterity and speed. The effect the matrix had on just the style of movies csnnot be overstated though.

The beefcake hero has had a recent resurgence recently like everything 80's has. Some of the old ones came back and new beefcakes like the rock and vin diesel have been on the rise.

When you say scientists were never the heroes in those black and white films, I don't know. You'd have to have blinkers on. Think of The Day The Earth Stood Still. War Of The Worlds. Forbidden planet, IT the the terror from beyond space, Just all the black and white Sci-fis. I don't know how to phrase this better. You're just incorrect on this point.

A super ascension to change those codes

What a complete load!

For a long time male scientist characters were the big heroes. Like in those black and white, 40's and 50's sci-fi movies. Then styles and attitudes changed, scientists became nerds and jock type sports people or more often some dumbass marine became the stock hero.

Muscle men were the word of the day through the 80's schwartzenegger, stalone days but then the matrix changed things like a tidal wave and we had sleak, quick male heroes for a decade or more.

What I mean is the aesthetic of popular heroes changes very easily depending on the zeitgeist of the time and if depictions of men can change so dramatically every decade it could for women too.

A really big one that's been brought up is older women. Men get to be depicted in a bunch of different ways but all women need to be sexy and YOUNG. that's so limiting. I'd certainly read something about a woman in her 50's or something who was a super hero or a sorceress or something. If she's a magic user that makes sense because maybe her age makes her stronger due to wisdom and practice.

Female characters should be a allowed a bit of grey and a few wrinkles.

Ahh. Hadn't seen that. I meant Harley quinn...the anime one is also hot though. :) maybe more guys aren't into that. The athlete one with the medals is the most appealing. I don't know what manga that is.

Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. In fact, if I ever saw a woman who looked like this, I would be terrified. Its safe to say even straight men wouldnt find this woman sexy,

We're going to have to disagreed here. Most men I have spoken to find her extremely appealing. Even the ones with different aesthetic tastes recognise that she's sexy, just more so for people who like skinny, busty women.

mightguy:Are you saying sexy men dont exist

Nope. I was saying that they need to exist more, and I saw saying it as a specific response to the male power fantasy thing. You see, as some people have pointed out, the sexy guys in super hero stuff are often sexy in a different way to the sexy women. as shown in the wolverine example earlier the guys are "supposed" to get off on the empowerment fantasy instead of it being a direct appeal to people saying look at these sexy boys.

The twilight example you've put up IS however targeted squarely at the female gaze and is not supposed to be about male audiences projecting onto them. it is one of the few examples of the author employing the mindset that I'm proposing.

If we can have comics which are fun and just throw out "hey, look how hot our female characters are." I think that's a nice bit of fun and wouldn't want to lose that for the world. We just really need to balance those scales by having more guys in the same context.

Your aquaman picture is exactly what I'm talking about. notice it's fan made and that's not really how he's shown in the comic. I think that maybe sometimes he should be...or that at least more male characters should be allowed to be. Right now they go "hey, you're reading Catwoman. You'd probably appreciate a gratuitous butt shot in this dialogue scene..." And I think they should do that with batman too. fair's fair. And they are. Attitudes are changing. They showed his dick at the end of last year, I believe. It's a brave new world.

Woohoo, there are more tough, brick shithouse women and more skinny boys in our media and that's good. it gives us as creators more options. I mean, I haven't PLAYED overwatch, but looking at their character design and the effect it's had on all media I'm very happy about how brave they've been in this field.

You've arrived at the problem but, to my mind the solution is not just to limit sexy women but to crank up sexy men. At the moment men trying to look visually appealing is never seen as a good thing and it's like an ongoing joke that men don't know how to dress or understand all that stuff. There'll be less people obsessed with being stoic and serious men and thinking that a man's place is to be strong, not sexy.

It's bad for women to only be seen as the sexy gender. It's bad for men never to be seen as the sexy gender.

Everything needs balance and moderation. People need options that suit the characters they want to make.

Man. I hate pops. People buy them for me as presents because I like comics so I must love pops...but they are dumb. If you were here you could have them.
