Finally moving out of my parents' house and into my own place. Do I have everything I need? What if the flat explodes? What if I don't know how to do anything? What if I get badly depressed again and forget to eat or sleep?

Well, a lot of stuff I could share would be spoilery so . . . let's talk about Ashes' development!

1. Back in the day, my main comic was a journal comic. This was back in school and I had a long, boring summer coming up with most of my friends away. So I decided to work on a sort of fictional story arc for said journal comic with superpowers and shadowy organisations, with the main characters (myself and pals) being watched and helped by two rogue agents, Wolf and Fox . . . eventually the story got complex, it seemed silly to tether it to a journal comic and the characters and world were getting so fleshed out, I uncoupled it entirely from the old comic and started afresh with Wolf and Fox as the main characters.

Okay, that was a long one.

2. Originally the grayscale was just because I found it easier than fully colouring every comic. Now, it's more representative of the tone of the comic and I use splashes of colour during dramatic and tense scenes.

3. What was originally going to be a very short first arc has expanded by several chapters in order to give a better view of the world the characters' live in before moving on. This has changed the course of some of the plot quite significantly as new characters and subplots have been introduced, however, the core of the plot has not been affected.

4. DI Cartwright originally showed up in the first chapter as 'Sergeant Cartwright'. However, when it came next time we needed a police officer to work with Wolf and Fox, we decided we liked her a lot and wanted to use her again. Hence she was hastily promoted to 'Detective Inspector' and older comics were updated with her new title. This is why she shows up in full police uniform in the first chapter or two, but now wears a non-uniform shirt, trousers and wool coat.

5. The characters who seem to have emerged as frontrunners for people's favourite characters have not been quite who I expected - I thought people might find Spider's mocking sciencey villainy slightly obnoxious, but people often seem to call her out as being one of their favourites. As a result, more of the background and depth that I've given her is making its way into the story than I originally intended.

Oooh, darn. Ashes has about three broad story arcs, of which we're about 2/3 through the first. That's taken me about five years, so uh . . . call it twenty years for safety, at this rate.

I really need to find a way to product more than one page in a week ;;^_^

Oh, okay, this has to go to a comment I got on r/comics. So, my comic takes place in a dystopian future and follows (among others) some agents of the secret police, and this is what I got on a random page -

Commenter - "Every day I dream about a future without liberals, anarchists and marxists."

Me - "Fascinating! Thanks for the comment. I am curious: Does this mean you assume Ashes is political commentary and if so, of what kind? I take great pleasure in hearing what people read into my work!"

Commenter - "Oh you have no idea how much I want to live in a world without child abusers, marxists and liberals. In the end they work for the same team and they are sons of the same parents. I believe it's too much anarchist/Vendetta style."

Ashes is decidedly not a political commentary . . . then again, what else should I have expected from reddit?

With ease, I should think. Ashes' cast is definitely female-biased, so I too have the opposite problem. Oops!

accrane:Jeez, how do you not have more subscribers? This is awesome! I spent a couple hours binging the whole thing, and I feel like I need to read it again just to pay more attention to the mysteries (maybe when I'm not grossly sleep deprived). It starts off pretty slow, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the mysteries you set up slowly unfolded over time, and weren't just forgotten about. I'm insanely curious to see how you're going to bring it all full-circle! I also really like the characters, especially how they interact when there isn't anything major going on. I'm having major fangirl moments just thinking about all of their different relationships, and fervently wishing that the main characters all get their acts together and work towards a better solution for the world (which would probably involve betraying the government, but it's fine). Also Spider is my wife and we're married now okay

If I had one nitpicky-type thing, I'd say the story might be starting to stagnate just a bit from status-quo syndrome, just because it seems like all the different factions and groups are circling around each other at this point. There's nothing wrong with a slow-burn- you've been doing great with the story so far- I just want things to come to a head, for better or worse! BATTLE. DEATH. DRAMA. You've definitely won my confidence, though. I can't wait to see what happens next! also can I have Spider merch where's the Spider merch

I was having a terrible day, but this took it from an E to an A+! I don't think anyone's ever fangirled about Ashes before! Thank you so, so much, and I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I guess that explains the massive hit spike . . .

That's a pretty good and well-put nitpick: it's true, I do like the slow build and try to work things in slowly and steadily before a high-tension snap. Ashes is split into a few distinct arcs in my head and we are perhaps two-thirds of the way through the first (Yeah, I know, I've planned out a long, long comic and I'm stuck at a page a week . . . pacing can be tricky!) so you should be seeing some big things happen relatively soon. But I will take that under advisement for future planning! I hope your confidence is well-put and you find the answer to these mysteries satisfying!

Gosh, I have so many questions I'd like to ask - I guess I already know who your favourite character is and who I ought to make some merch of next! But suffice to say, I'm really glad you like the characters and their interactions, and you're fiding the story gripping. I wasn't sure I was doing a good job, so knowing you like it this much has filled me with joy! I'm more inspired than ever to keep developing my characters and pushing all the way to the plot's finale! Thanks again~

Oh, gosh. Well, we're six chapters and 238 pages in, and I'd say we're I dunno, 2/3 of the way through . . . the first arc. Of roughly three.

Yeah, unless I can somehow find the time between working full time and being depressed to pick up the pace and do more than one page a week, it's gonna take some time.

Cartwright was cosplayed at anime Boston once, and a friend of mine sent pictures of a Wolf costume she put together, but I don't think she's used it! It really is living the dream when that happens!

It really depends on the arc! Future arcs may have a different feel to this first one . . . but for this one, since it's all set in one place, reasonably cheerful, and mostly about meeting all the major players, I guess if I could I'd nick -

Crazy Noisy Bizarre Town - The DU

And for an ending -

Never Say Never - Three Lights Down Kings

Mine follows a pair of adorable siblings who become agents of the secret police in dystopian future London. Tensions are rising as the government, the resistance and criminal gangs vie for control of London . . . meanwhile, a vast conspiracy is lurking as superpowered individuals start to appear. it's an action/mystery, but to balance out the darkness, it also has some witty or cute moments.

We're currently taking a short break from the main story to prepare for chapter seven. If you wanted to check it out, now's a good time to catch up!

Assuming I don't get the chance to speed up production . . . Just about finishing chapter ten and drawing the first arc to its dramatic conclusion orrr just about starting the second major arc. Hopefully with a bit more of a following, though it's slow going . . . I hope by then my art has improved just as dramatically as it has between my first Ashes page and my most recent ones. Maybe if something truly amazing happens, I'll be able to use Ashes as more of a job than just a hobby and really branch it out a bit. That'd be nice!

spidar:Ashes:
This comic follows an adorable pair of siblings that have been trained to be special agents. It is an exciting story. There is non-stop action and amusing quips from the cast. There is mystery. The comic is mainly presented in gray-scale, but uses on occasion a splash of color for emphasis. The style is mostly a masculine, rigid one, save for the large, emotional eyes every character has. This small fleck of innocence gives this comic its own personality. The proportions gives the characters a sense of youth and expressiveness. You can really feel their moods. The creator of this comic has put a lot of time and effort into it and it shows. It is a great action comic.

Ah, thank you so much! Your comments have definitely lifted my spirits today~

spidar:Next: Ashes (which has a super huge archive, so I will be getting to it on my next day off. I will get to everybody that has requested, but it will take time.)

Please forgive me! I'm not a great judge of archive size. Kinda why I need a bit of a self-esteem boost - been going four years and I'm still not sure if there's anything attractive about it at all ;;^_^ So I'm grateful for this thread!
