A bit late and not comics, but I just realized Cupcake Landers videos on YouTube are lighthearted, some are rustic for sci-fi, and a few are downright pastoral. There might be a question of whether an interplanetary voyage can ever be considered pastoral, but what if the voyage in question was just to hang out with friends. :) Many videos are about flying planes; swooshing over the terrain, but none of them look like normal planes. :)

I refuse to answer that on the basis of totally not being in a serious mood right now.

Snakescare was the reason my post was cut short. But it turned out to be nothing, so I came back and finished it. But anyway, we have a pretty good earth-thumper communication system, it's rare for anyone to actually get eaten. Really, only the most foolish gerbils get eaten, anyway.

Oh, Geoffrey the Genius invented a special keyboard back in '78. So we don't have to look at the keys, (which is a bit of a strain as you might imagine,) it has one key per finger and we just keep our fingers on the keys. The keys are pressed in chords to enter characters. It's quite powerful and efficient.

-3-:A point should not drive a policy. That's a big problem with modern thinking. Folks tend to fixate on one point and let that drive everything; and we've seen how out of balance that gets looking at society today.

Indeed. Thinking about communication in particular, I've come to the conclusion that all communication involves compromise because no two people communicate in precisely the same way. But having said that, (or alternatively, For instance,) I don't think Mr. Tweezen was being serious.

Mr. Tweezen:we should reenact emojis — posthaste!

Hmm! :) Reenactments are for people who couldn't view or participate in the original thing. I suggest seeing post #43 for several fine reenactments of emoji! XD

I'm in a curious situation with emoji. I do communicate better with pictures, but I have some problems with emoji specifically. I struggle to find things in large collections; it's hard to even see the details of individual items. No matter how hard I try, I often can't find one which feels just right for what I want to convey, even in the largest collections of emoji. I could use them in combination as I did with phpBB smileys back in '04, but with so very many emoji, it's much harder to get used to them than it was to get used to phpBB's dozen or so. (It wasn't easy for me to get used to phpBB's, but once I did, I loved them.) Then there's entering them. I've had so much practice typing that I can type fluently when I'm hardly fit to even talk. Staring at a butt-load of emoji trying to pick out a suitable when I can't even really see individual ones properly (as described above) is a painful obstacle by comparison.

If I'm going to use emoji comfortably, I suppose I'd have to take time to select a few I like, then use keyboard macro software to designate one key as emoshift and assign my selected emoji to various keys. Then, I'd have to paint the emoji on the fronts of the keys so I don't forget. I've heard of people getting keyboards with extra keys and assigning emoji to them, but I find conventional keyboards too big already.

hearth-fire:Well i don’t have a picture for a tomboy girl/snake god that devours the world stuffing her face with potato chips while looking like a demon

I can see how that would be a bit tricky, yes.

mitchellbravo:You are a small rodent irl

I'll have you know we gerbils are a proud and noble race! XD

Actually, male gerbils can be surprisingly tough-guy like on occasion. It's surprising to watch.

RozMatozz:It's all in the name usertitle

That does help, particularly on this board where it's clearly visible. (That's uncommon.)

That reminds me how disturbing it is when a heterosexual male has a hot chick for an avatar. XD Some people just don't realise their avatar isn't just a pretty picture, it's a stand-in for their face. I'm not expecting too much, just not a polar opposite of who they are. XD

I know I've read and watched pastoral sci-fi in the dim and distant past, but can't properly remember any of it. There are a couple of works I do remember; not exactly pastoral in setting but definitely positive.

Ghost Protocol by Mark Sachs is a short story. It plays with and outright inverts tropes from "oldschool humans-are-great pulp SF," to use the author's words. I've seen those tropes played straight far too many times, so I love it. :D

A Miracle of Science is a 435-page, long-since-finished webcomic notable for being one of the very few positive depictions of a group mind. It gets a bit gritty in places but, like Ghost Protocol, there's an element of the nicer side of people there all along, often in the person of the group mind's representative! (Not entirely surprising; GP's author is AMoS's artist.) Towards the end, you get to see the group mind's home planet. It's so peaceful and well-tended that I think of it as virtually pastoral despite the towering (and disconnected!) architecture of the bustling cities. In a way, it is. Everyone in the group mind is peaceful and happy while still retaining individuality, and the cities tower so as not to impinge on the fragile and slowly developing ecosystem.

Oh! How could I possibly have forgotten Ellie on Planet X? The main comic absolutely has a pastoral setting. It's written for children, but most of the readers seem to be sci-fi authors and artists. When you start looking into the backstory, you can see why: it's got the kind of depth and detail that only true nerds would create, getting wonderfully immersive at times, but maintains its lightheartedness throughout. I love it so much! XD

But now I'm going to check out a few of the other links in this thread, I think. :)

BlueDragon:Agreeing with others: I love that we can add our pronouns. But I miss the location, because people can be cheeky and it makes me happy XD

Speaking as a cheeky locator, I'd like it back too. :) But it is about time I set a new location. Maybe I should do that in sync with my real-life move...

Smol looks cute as always. Tella looks like a barrel of laughs as she usually does when there isn't too much trouble about. :) Fyre looks suitably no-nonsense and guard-like, but not as cute as I expected. Dunno why, maybe it's the increased detail.

hearth-fire:Actually we did post that, the thread got deleted tho unfortunately, it was in hell

Oooh! Haha :D

I spotted the "hell can be accessed" post, but didn't get around to reading it.

Merged Doublepost:

So now I'm thinking hell wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be. (Perhaps I've changed.) It did, however, have the weirdest thread I've ever read. Or should I say, skimmed. It was, however, interesting to see the #4 and #1 best behaved users in there. I mean, if CF's #1 best-behaved user ended up in hell, what hope is there for the rest of us? ;)

I always miss these things! It's probably because I have no sense of time. (Actually, I was really ill, so I guess I wouldn't have been very funny anyway.)

I can't believe no-one posted this:
I, for one, welcome our new machine overlords. Any computer can be hacked, given enough time.
