Hi folks!

Does anybody wanna do a guest strip for my comic Aimeski?

I don't need it urgently, but I thought it might be good to have some in reserve for the weeks when I can't be bothered am too busy to post, or just to give me some time to get ahead if I feel like it.

If you don't already read it, click on the link thingo below to get an idea of what sort of strip it is; it is vaguely episodic, there is only the loosest concept of continuity, and the characters are pretty one-dimensional so it's not like you have to be our generation's answer to Shakespear as long as you're funny and not offended easily.

My only stipulation is that I won't really go for anything which is homophobic/racist/sexist/etc unless you're actually ridiculing those attitudes in the process.

Anyone want to give it a go or if you have any questions, probably best to email me, I don't really get a heap of time to check out the forum these days. Email address is razsolo at rocketmail dot com

Thanks peeps! :D

Elemental Leper:eh, everyone has different tastes and different ideas.
honestly, I'm happy if it makes me laugh, or if it has a good story.

Yeah, I'm with this umm..leper. ;)

Some people are doing this because they do want to make a career out of it, some are doing it just because it's a fun way to kill time...the only difference between webcomics and print comics really is that it's so much easier to get them out there and to a wider audience online, but it's not like anyone's dragging that wider audience in by the lapels and beating their head against a wall to MAKE them read it. If I don't like something for whatever reason, I'll just ignore it, I'm not gonna rag on someone for doing it...

The only thing I think is really bad form is copying someone else's work and stuff like that which actually really does have the potential to negatively impact someone else. There is plenty of stuff I don't like, and tbh I'd say there are way more comics I don't like than I do, but that doesn't mean they're doing anything wrong necessarily, just that I'm not into what they're doing...

Hi everyone!

I am a bit excited, I have finished Issue 3 of Dreamguard, which concludes their origin story! Yay! If you haven't already had a look, check it out and tell me what yez think....I am especially fond of people telling me they think it is the best thing ever, but if you do have any constructive feedback that is good also. ;)

Issue 3 begins here.

If you want to read the whole first story arc, try this one on for size.

I am also gonna start adding some extra features soon, text pieces and such.....anyway, thanks for getting this far without poking your eyes out from boredom! :D

Kyo:We have this, it's just a matter of utilizing the feeds

Is it a setting I need to change or something? As it is at the moment, I have my RSS box which has my subscriptions in there, but I still need to actually open each one in a browser window to see if they have updated...so it's useful because they're all bookmarked in the one place, but it still doesn't let me see at a glance when there are unviewed updates. If I could see at a quick glance when there are new pages posted on each strip without having to actually open a new page to do it, that would be awesome! :D

When I first started doing Aimeski, I started a fan page on facebook for it, and I used to post strips to the page and send updates when I uploaded to the hosting site; it worked really well for a while, it gave me a solid idea of how many people liked it, people commented a lot, etc....

Then facebook changed the way their page notifications are sent out, and now you really have to go out of your way to see whether a page you're a fan of has updated. I was still sending updates out every week, but a lot of people weren't even aware of it because they never realised the update was sitting in their inbox. I thought it kind of defeated the purpose of having a fan page if people didn't even know when there was stuff added to it, and I stopped using facebook just before I started using comicfury.

I post on twitter at the moment when I've uploaded new strips, but I'm not sure how effective this is tbh....I have a feeling the only people who are actually checking out the link are my friends, and they would know anyway when there's a new strip.

Does anyone else have any experience (good or bad) with social networking, using online resources etc to promote your work? I would be interested to hear anyone else's ideas of what works and doesn't work. :)

Damian:a better idea is to have a separate alerts box for subscriptions.

I like this idea better....it would be cool if we had an alert box which was distinct from our inbox...

Actually, I dunno how it all works because I'm a bit of a luddite, but I used to follow some comic's RSS feed (Achewood maybe? I don't remember which one it was..) and anyway, the actual RSS box at the top of my browser would update with the newest installment so I didn't have to actually load the comic to check if it had updated. Is it possible to do something like this?

Here is Aimeski from May 2008 (this is from the firstest ever strip I did):
Image: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2702/4418966805_1c805e865b_o.jpg

And here she is from a couple weeks ago:

The obvious difference is that she is color now....she pretty much looks exactly the same except the little hairclip thing she wears has changed direction...exciting stuff, huh? :\

Two characters from the strip that have undergone more radical changes are the gay sidekick and the hippy; Gay Dave used to be modelled on a friend of mine named Ryan, but after some ridiculous dramas with Ryan's boyfriend I had to promise I wouldn't use him in the strip anymore so he had an inexplicable name change to Dave with an appearance change to go along with it. The hippy was originally modelled on me, but well....I'm not really much of a hippy, and the character in the strip isn't really much like me. So I figured it would make more sense to make him actually look like a hippy.

Y'all know you are never getting the two minutes of your lives back that you just spent reading this post... ;)

Aimeski takes about 2-3 hours from conception to upload.

Dreamguard is a bit more stretched out....I write a bunch of issue synopses on the train and then re-write while I'm drawing and uploading....from putting pencil to page until upload, each page I would say takes me a couple of days (or about 6 hours on average)

Awesome inking on that piece, dude! :D

*runs to check out the comic*

Before I decided on doing Dreamguard as my superhero webcomic, I was gonna go with another idea...here are some characters that were developed for that:

This is a mad idea! :D

If someone wants to do some of mine, I present to you the cynical and violent Aimeski (as can be seen here...the little white thing in her hair is meant to be a hairclip): aimeski.thecomicseries.com/comics/5/ Aimeski is based on a friend of mine, so I would be interested to see how someone interprets her in a more realistic style...

or to pick someone from my other comic, the team's nemesis Marion Dreamchilde (she's the blonde woman in the purple dress): dreamguard.thecomicseries.com/comics/12/

Lemme know if you want me to do any in return! :)

Johlin!

Your reviews are ace!

If you could do one for Aimeski: aimeski.thecomicseries.com aaaaand
Dreamguard {url]http://dreamguard.thecomicseries.com[/url] I will give you a cookie! And be grateful! :D

I figure you won't get around to it till 2012 due to the 450 people ahead of me, so I can wait....

The lettering for both started off terrible and has gotten better (hopefully!), I am gonna start putting more work into inking for Dreamguard as well.....any other feedback you can give me would be much appreciated, especially re: the writing on Dreamguard, whether it flows well and okay I will shut up now and let you do it. Thanks mucho muchachos! :D

BishopFrenzy:I think more work on backgrounds would help too -- I discourage people from using the "clouds" filters to create backgrounds, because it's pretty common and tends to look kind of bad behind detailed line work. It grabs attention away from your art, which you definitely don't want. Even if you don't want to do backgrounds in every shot, abstract shapes, tones and colours help.

Great work, looking forward to seeing more! :D

Thanks! :D

re: the clouds, that was meant to be a deliberate thing....Dreamchilde's dimension being a barren wasteland with no real discerning features. Of course, now that I've actually gone and written that down I can see how it might present a problem in a visual medium having a landscape which is by its nature boring to look at. LOL

I can see what you're saying anyway though, I guess maybe I should have called attention more to the fact that it's *meant* to be like that? ie: have the characters mention it or something?

I'm glad you brought it up, sometimes it's kind of hard looking at story elements from an objective point of view and forgetting that the reader isn't automatically privy to my assumptions about how the fictional world is constructed...everything's a work in progress I suppose! :)
