thank you!! maybe the "subscribe or die" encourages defiance?
the next chapter is the most wrist-aching stuff I've ever drawn so I hope you enjoy it. also, this is the first time someone has brought up JTHM but not said that my art style is similar to it. (they're right.) it looks edgy because of the art, and all the drugs and murder jokes, but outside of the gags it's a pretty low-key story. I like stuff that's understated.
hi! if this sounds interesting to you, my comic Lines Uncrossed (link in sig) is a surreal/slice-of-life about two punks dealing with drug habits, mental illness, and capitalist despair. feel free to put this one at the end of your queue, the pages coming in the next couple of weeks will add a decent amount of story.
I like using fake but realistic locations so that I have something to base it off, and can flesh out the world with details that I observe from places I go, but the freedom to put whatever I need in the location. I work without an outline or any knowledge of where the story is going so the most important thing is keeping my options open.
xwindows:Back to English-speaking online platforms, the problem arose when some people tried to tie their gender identity, not only to their own expression, but to other people's expression though the mandated (as opposed to requested) use of specific pronouns. This resulted in speech coercion, which is a nasty treatment of others' freedom of expression.
One is free to identify as one wish; and one may request (but must not require) other to give specific accommodation, willingly, within the reasonable boundary of general courtesy. In any case, treatment of existence or nonexistence of such information must be conductive to civil discussion even when the parties disagrees with each other; and not acting as a contention point itself.
- Do not automatically infer pronouns preferences from Male/Female/Non-binary/etc specification, because it does not always reflect actual preferences
yeah dude, I mandate that you use the right pronouns for me the way I mandate you use my name when addressing me. I'm not gonna come to your house and beat you up for not doing that, but...if you use the wrong pronouns, you're wrong. it's interesting how you recognize that gender identity doesn't necessarily correspond to pronouns, because that's literally the point of being able to see someone's pronouns easily. so that you know what their preferences are.
if this is just you being worried because you naturally use gender neutral pronouns for everyone, I seriously doubt anyone is going to come at you with pitchforks and torches for a blanket "they/them". but it's not the hardest habit to kick when you can take 0.2 seconds to glance at the sidebar and see what they want to be called anyway.
DSW:The whole reason the right are so good at what they do is that they don't actually believe in things, you can't hold them to any moral standard because they don't care. "You were against the BLM protests against police brutality, but at this protest a police officer was actually killed, how does that make sense?" Republicans don't actually care, easy. This isn't a generalization either, this is demonstrable reality that you can witness yourself.
The shift left we are seeing amongst people will get more pronounced now that the democrats have control, and if anyone remembers the Obama years, the democrats are also a party of people who don't believe in anything except capital. Actually, scratch that, they care about public image and legacy. They take these things very seriously, whereas Republicans don't care what you think about them, which is why they have controlled the country so regularly. The fact that we just got Trump out of office, which a lot of people said was the most important thing we could have done (I do agree that it's better than having him in office,) but remember, Obama left the door open for a Donald Trump. Joe Biden will leave the door swinging open for someone worse than Trump. We are at a very serious divide in history.
Also I hate the empty dialogue of "this isn't who America is." This is absolutely the true face of America you are witnessing.
well said, I wish more people realized this. calling out Republicans in this way only works when talking to fence-sitters and apolitical people. it's not a valuable part of leftist discourse.
I'm late to the military talk, and apologies if we're not supposed to go there in this thread, but the American military absolutely uses predatory tactics for recruitment. there's a reason that they primarily recruit from poor neighborhoods with the promise of paying for college and offering a secure job. it's not good when anyone does it, but it's particularly disgusting when it's so openly for imperialist efforts. (my links to US involvement in Chile, Iran, and Bolivia are pretty good evidence of that.)
do most people in the military kill? no. but you don't have to kill with your own two hands to contribute to the atrocities going on. this is who America has been from the very start.
Lutzbug:Just look at how much ship art depicts one character being annoyed by the other, or even trying to get away from them—and it’s supposed to be cute. ... At the very least, this tendency towards dubcon in BL warrants a deeper look. It should be understood by both the readers and the author that real life relationships don’t work like a yaoi comic. Consent is an important topic, and the BL target demographic seems pretty naive and impressionable.
this is an important thing that we need to talk about when it comes to gay comics, that the so-called "representation" in BL consists mostly of abusive and/or incestuous partnerships. as a young queer kid looking for queer relationships in the comics I read, finding screwed up BL with lines like "men are only in it for sex" and lots of clear abuse and fetishization was a pretty awful experience.
I think it's more fun to draw two characters who look overjoyed just to be standing next to each other, personally.
it's sad that a lot of gamers got radicalized to the alt-right, because conservative policies and capitalism are actually what hurt the quality of video games. a lot of kids have this kneejerk reaction of disgust to seeing women and gay people and non-white people in games, not realizing that it's a lot more disgusting that the game they're playing was produced under horrific work conditions. it's hard for me to play a game knowing that devs worked under crunch till they burned out, while the executives raked in all the profit. and much of the time, the devs get laid off after or simply have to leave due to burnout.
not to mention the predatory nature of microtransactions and how in-game purchases lower the quality of the game because companies no longer need to sell a complete or polished experience--they just half-do it and sell all the missing pieces back to us!
Lutzbug:A Johnny the Homicidal Maniac fan comic where Jimmy hears Edgar Vargas and Nny having sex. Jimmy cries big, bitter tears for like 5 pages. In a jealous rage, he stabs Edgar in the chest. Nny and Jimmy argue for a few pages. Then they all kill each other.
somehow this is the one that makes me want to break out the vodka
the problem with left-wing governments (or even moderately progressive administrations) is that the CIA assassinates your leader and America sanctions you until you have absolutely nothing left but a fascist dictatorship
dieselpunkscomics:So since you stated youre a far leftist then do you think its ok to destroy someones small business they worked their whole life for , to take away their ability to support and feed their family , because youre mad about something they didn't even do ? Just adking because thats what leftist extremists did all summer ..
now that's a strawman lol
anyway, although it's a technical minority of people who would straight up assault or kill someone for their sexual orientation or the color of their skin, the much larger subset of people who would stand around doing nothing about it are useless too. replace "assault or kill someone" with "make policies discriminating against" and this is basically how the government works. minority creates harmful policies, most others stand around and let it happen, innocent people's lives are tangibly ruined.
it's hard to conceive how much people's lives depend on random laws until you encounter it yourself. I once signed a contract out of sheer anxiety and was saved by a law stating that people can back out of contracts within three days, no penalties. without that law I would have been pretty screwed. (you could say that's my problem for signing something I knew I shouldn't be signing. I was young. I'm more of an asshole now so I can avoid these situations.)
this example didn't have anything to do with discrimination but imagine if there was a policy stating that medical workers can deny care to people based on religious beliefs--oh wait there is
oh ok, I think I'm too used to people actually thinking there's some liberal SJW conspiracy to turn everyone gay or something, or acting like the presence of gay people infringes on their rights somehow lol
ccznen:Many Republicans support same-sex marriage. As a Christian, I think it is morally wrong, but I support anybody's right to participate in it so long as they don't encroach upon the rights of others.
"as long as they don't encroach upon the rights of others"--key phrase here. What constitutes "encroaching upon the rights of others"? Certainly no one is forcing straight people to get married to same-sex partners. I can't think of anything else that would harm people's rights, that comes from two gay people getting married.
ccznen:People are not against abortion because they hate the freedom of women. They are against abortion because they believe it kills a living human being that should be accorded personhood under the law. You might disagree with this assessment, but you must understand pro-life motivations are not what pro-choicers claim.
Studies show that people who hold anti-abortion beliefs are much more likely to be against gender equality.
(page 18 and down)
Time and time again it's been proven that what actually lowers the rate of abortion is proper sex ed and access to contraceptives. The Republican party has worked to prevent both.
(source 12 )
edit: though this has strayed from the original point of the thread, so I'll bring it back around--policy decisions such as the abortion bans in several states show that it's not just the MAGA terrorists that pose a threat to marginalized people. Always look at a politician's track record before you decide whether or not to support them.
keep in mind that the only reason social media sites are taking action now is because they know the bad PR from letting fascists remain on their site will cost them more than the money the fascists are giving them. part of the reason that they were able to gather so many followers in the first place is because the algorithm favors their content, whether that be on youtube, facebook, or twitter.
how many innocent kids were sucked down the anti-SKW pipeline just a few years ago? it's frighteningly easy to go from "I didn't like the new Star Wars, I wonder what reviewers have to say about it" to straight up Nazi shit. if these sites actually wanted to act against fascism, they would have done something about it a long time ago.
I refer you once again to my previous post quoting Republicans wishing for "undesirable" groups to be hurt, and people in favor of racial justice to be shot. when a group consistently supports repressive policies and retaliatory action against those advocating for better treatment of marginalized groups, one must wonder exactly why they do feel the way they do.
yeah, like, I would hope we're all antifa lol, that's a good fuckin' thing to be, ANTIfascist
in all seriousness I'm damn sick of hearing "both sides" as if people who want me dead for not being white have any place in a moral argument. guess what, just because there are two sides to an issue does not mean both of them are morally equivalent. sometimes people are just wrong and their opinions are bad. sucks to suck.
