thewebcomiclist.com is a reasonably popular webcomic list site that checks registered sites for their latest update, and prints each day's updated comics in a big handy list. Their spider that checks for updates looks for a dated comment in the front page HTML, in the following format
<!-- Last Update: dd/mm/yyyy -->

where dd mm yyyy are numbers representing the day, month, and year of the latest comic update. Are there ComicFury variables I could substitute in there to get this date code comment to work in a ComicFury page template (and specifically, in an Overview page)?

It was somebody else who was interested in getting thewebcomiclist's list working with their ComicFury site, but if you made them then I could help that person get their comic working on the list, which it seems they would like, so...yeah! :D

You just encase the text you want in between "" and "" without the parenthesis. You can just copy and paste the one I made if you want. :)

Hah, I knew there had to be a thread about this! (Found it via a Google search!) Just bumping in case there's any advance on this request.

I tried the obvious, i.e. inserting the TWCL date stamp into a new comic's HTML code, but this isn't being seen, TWCL's latest update list bot doesn't pick it up.

So I thought, whoa, why not create a physical index.htm page (this page doesn't exist if I type in the full URL, "Error: No such page") containing the date stamp *and* a redirect to the comic URL just in case someone ever enters said full URL, e.g.

<HTML>
<!-- Last Update: 11/07/2011 -->
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" content="0; URL=http://mars.thecomicseries.com/">
</HTML>

Alas the "Create an extra page" option doesn't allow a period in the filename,

Error!: Sorry, but the URL may only contain numbers, letters, underscores and minuses!

...and I'm not sure whether TWCL's update check bot checks files other than index.htm

Kyo:confirmed for CF7

Pardon my ignorance, I'm not sure if Comic Fury is at version CF7 yet, I can't see any help or info links anywhere that state the current level (there's probably a thread somewhere in News & Announcements...).

Yeah, this has been in all default layouts for a while, I don't know why the bot wouldn't pick it up. It's there if you view source. Is there some sort of specification for the bot?

Sorry Kyo, what does that mean? That it should work OK if I insert the date stamp into a custom HTML page? Or is there somewhere else, another page, it should go into?

Edit: hah sorry you edited while I was editing.

The comic's TWCL profile has the right URL http://www.thewebcomiclist.com/p/19835/MARS so it should be checking.

Guess I'll try again and wait and see what happens, and report back?

I'd be interested in where you found your information about the bot? I can take a look and maybe figure out why it isn't working

On their list my comic says "not checked for updates", and it says something about "not compatible with their crawler?" or comic is not active anymore. Whatever! Their loss, not mine.

You updated your comic layout with those vote buttons before we added the thing for their crawler

There's an old Questions and Answers thread in TWCL's Site Problems / Broken Comics forum that has info about what the bot looks for, i.e. the date stamp in UK format,

http://www.thewebcomiclist.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=303

That's about as much as I know, sorry.

I'll keep checking after updates and if anything ever clicks and my comic is added to the list, I'll let you know.

Added:

Kyo:You updated your comic layout with those vote buttons before we added the thing for their crawler

...vote buttons? The comic only got added here Thursday 7th last week. Did the crawler thing just get updated between then and now? (Just asking.)

moizmad:On their list my comic says "not checked for updates", and it says something about "not compatible with their crawler?" or comic is not active anymore. Whatever! Their loss, not mine.

Yes it is, tho' when my comic appeared on the list for the first time (because it was NEW that day, not because of the date stamp bot check) I got a fair number of visitors.

Well I looked into it and I didn't notice anything wrong. You'll probably be better helped asking them why it doesn't mark your comic as updated, not me, since they are the one who know how their bot works.

edit: I was talking to mo about the vote buttons
