ComicFury Makes A Visual Novel

Hello, Random Forum User! How'd you like to become involved with something only tangentially related to webcomics? Of course you would! I mean, c'mon, who uses a site called ComicFury for comics? Not a hip cool person like yourself, that's who!

What the heck is a visual novel?

I'm glad you asked, Random Forum User! A visual novel is a type of story-driven game which blurs the line between "player" and "reader". Some examples are Katawa Shoujo, Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, and Fate/stay night [sic].

Aren't visual novels just dating sims?

Nope! While there's certainly a lot of overlap, many well-known VNs have little-to-no romantic content. Of the above, Katawa Shoujo is explicitly a dating sim, Fate/stay night has elements of one but is also about fighting and magic, and 999 is an escape-the-room mystery (okay, yes, there's some flirting). If anything, the defining trope of visual novels is probably "mind screw", though that's also optional.

In other words, visual novels are characterized more by their interface style and a heavy focus on plot, rather than any particular narrative genre.

What's the gameplay like?

Because visual novels are so narrative-heavy, actual gameplay tends to take a secondary role. Most commonly, the player is given a menu of choices for the viewpoint character at predefined points, with the overall set of choices determining part of the plot. However, it's certainly possible for a visual novel to have more gameplay. 999, for example, alternates between narrative and puzzle segments. Other VNs integrate battle systems and strategy game mechanics.

So why are we making one?

The visual novel format has three characteristics that make it particularly appealing for a community project:

* Flexibility: The format imposes just enough requirements that we don't have to start from square 1. Whatever our team members interests are, we can represent them in a VN.
* Scalability: Some successful VNs have been made by teams as small as two. Others use whole game studios. With a few committed people, we can build something interesting, but there's plenty of room for ambition, too.
* Wide scope: VNs encompass writing, music, multiple kinds of visual art, and possibly gameplay design and animation. There's plenty of room for people with different talent sets.

No, I mean, why are we doing a community project? They never work.

Well, they all make the same mistakes. We're not going to.

Go on...

Community projects usually die for lack of clear, agreed-upon vision, lack of oversight, or both. Therefore, to make ours work, we'll implement a variant of Agile:

* Development will be broken down into clearly defined tasks ("stories" in Agile vernacular), which developers will take responsibility for.
* Each story will be small, allowing effective reporting and collaboration between team members.
* Team members will stay in contact to make sure we're on the same page and making progress.

Taken together, these requirements imply agreeing on a clear vision together. To be clear, this does not mean compromising on everything. I'll be acting as project lead; it's my job to synthesize everyone's ideas into something cohesive. I'll be as fair, transparent, democratic about this as possible; in exchange, team members are expected to abide by those decisions. Furthermore, team members are expected to remain active (within reason).

So where do we begin?

First off, if you're interested, please indicate that, along with which role (or roles) you're interested in. Please post here to indicate your interest, and then PM me with a sample of your work. If you don't have a work sample readily available (or if you're applying for a position where one doesn't make sense, like editing), PM me anyway, and we'll work something out. Consider this an audition process: too many cooks spoil the broth, so we need a team that will work well together.

A rough outline of available roles might look something like this. Of course, this is certainly subject to change depending on availability and the game concept we ultimately agree on. Feel free to apply for multiple positions; let your concern be what interests you, not perfectly mapping that to a semi-arbitrary, semi-placeholder list in a forum post that's subject to change anyway.

Roles available:

Writing
* Script director/plot master (1)
* Primary writers (2-3)
* Editor (1-2)

Art
* Art director (1)
* Character artists (2-4)
* Background artists (2-4)
* CG artists (1-?)
* UI artist (0-1)
* Animator (0-1)

Other
* Gameplay designer (0-1)
* Testers (0-?)
* Composer (1-?)
* Music director (0-1)

Second, if you're interested, make a proposal for what you're looking for. This can be as simple as a genre, plot element, or character concept you'd like to see; or it can be more involved. I'll create polls as needed.

Once we've got a solid team and a solid concept, we can move ahead to fleshing out our ideas into something actionable, then start development.

So, what'll it be, Random Forum User? If I've kept your attention this long, you've got some interest, right? Riiiiiight? So go ahead, make a post! Propose a proposal, submit an application, bother* me with questions, whatever! If we all do our best, we can be part of something truly excellent†!

* You won't actually be a bother, I promise. You're amazing. We should make out.

† Translator's note: I may be attempting to sound anime, since that's hip with the kids these days.

IF YOU FUCKING SPOIL DOKI DOKI I WILL GENOCIDE APPLES

Also cool! Do you have any samples of your work that you can submit? If not, that's cool, we can work something out (I'll probably just give you a prompt). Whatever works.

Howdy. I'm just gonna put a little boopy <3 next to everything i'd be interested in doing, 'kay? Not that I expect to get all of it... But the amount of workload I'm willing to take on is higher than you may think.

Writing
* Script director/plot master (1) <3
* Primary writers (2-3) <3
* Editor (1-2) <3

(Wait, doesn't that mean I'd be editing my own writing? Yes. Shut up, I do that obsessively already anyway.)

Art
* Art director (1) <3? (I'd need to hear a little more about what this entails.)
* Character artists (2-4) <3
* Background artists (2-4)
* UI artist (0-1) <3? (This would be designing the UI elements? I'd be tentatively down.)
* Animator (0-1)

Gameplay
* Gameplay designer (0-1) <3 (I design a lot of menus in my spare time, not gonna lie.)
* Testers (0-?) <3 (This is something I'd probably do obsessively anyway if you gave me access to test builds.)

i'm interested. in something to do with writing. i'll pm you i guess.

i'd kinda like to be the plot master, and i'd love it if our novel had some kind of meaning behind it, or at least a theme to make sure that the story we're telling actually matters.

But what is the genre of the game ? The ambientation / history? ¿Date simulator with monster girls? ¿Horror investigation whit monsters like Lovecraft?

I have a story that I would thought use in a webcomic, but if you're interested it could be used for a videogame.

The story begins with a detective who investigates a series of murders, the murderer have ripped out the skin of the back, apparently all the victims had a tattoo on the back, a page of a book called "Necronomicon".that the killer has taken....

If the engine wasn't yet addressed. I suggest to take Godot 3 in account, despite many are probably thinking Ren'Py and similar projects.

Godot is under active development and is supporting html5 right from scratch (which the visual novel could be hosted on a website itself: download for Linux/MacOS/Android etc being optional), it has zero issues with licensing: if someone in comic fury community want to push further with their own project: he/she could even publish on Steam, GoG,Itch.io and other popular platform.

The 3d support is not invasive (it can be completely ignored and being used for 2d only. Unity, for example, doesn't have real 2D... everything is a "tweaked down" 3D).

The problem is there's not a visual novel framework at this moment available: if you google for "godot visual novel" you'll see several unfinished project, unfortunately. But I know for sure there's a point-and-click adventure framework (with both dialogue/story and portrait system) available already:

Holy crap, this thread took off! Okay, okay, let's go through these...

Lingerie Matter Sequencer:This is an interesting idea; I'd be happy to be a Tester.

Noted.

Nama:okay i'll pm you later

Looking forward!

Text:(This would be designing the UI elements? I'd be tentatively down.)

Yup!

Text:(I'd need to hear a little more about what this entails.)

Alright, I'll send you the role description.

satyr:If the engine wasn't yet addressed. I suggest to take Godot 3 in account, despite many are probably thinking Ren'Py and similar projects.

As much as I hate to shoot down discussion, I'd like to table discussion of engines until later on. We want to choose the right tools for our requirements, and we won't know what we're looking for until we have a solid handle on what our story and gameplay are like. I'll make a note of the engine, though.

And that brings us to...

The Letter M:There's nothing to say it can't be a dating sim, right?

Not at all! If that's what the group wants to do, that's what we'll do. That said, "dating sim" is a pretty wide spectrum, and there are plenty of ways to play with the genre or mix it with others (a trope bordering on cliche among VNs - and for good reason; they tend to be fun).

I guess what I'm trying to say is, nothing's particularly off the table right now.

Fomalhaut:But what is the genre of the game ?

That's still TBD, and the first thing we should hammer out. If you have any suggestions-

The story begins with a detective who investigates a series of murders, the murderer have ripped out the skin of the back, apparently all the victims had a tattoo on the back, a page of a book called "Necronomicon".that the killer has taken....

-oh, you do, huh?

Well, that's one proposal, two if you count "dating sim" from The Letter M. I believe Paul has a proposal of his own coming, and hell, I'll throw two of my own into the ring:

* In the space future, a utopic government contemplates surrender in the face of militaristic invaders. One irregular unit decides that's stupid. Explosions (and, optionally, dating sim elements) happen.
* An actual game of Mafia, except the deaths are real and the "players" never signed up for this.

Lastly, I've updated the role list with a new "CG artist" position. If you're not sure what "CG" means in this context, see here.
