Heads-up, people. Anyone (like me) who has a Tumblr blog with explicit nudity, sex, etc, needs to back up the content before 17 Dec when it'll be deleted. Go to this page for details of how to do that. Word to the wise: the "backup processing" phase seems to take a LONG time, so don't leave things to the last minute.

As lame as it is... I get it.

Tumblr has a rampant spambot problem and a downright horrifying amount of CP. As it is now, the problem's just too big to handle manually, and the tech isn't there to handle it automatically (specifically the pedophilia stuff, the bots could probably be dealt with if Tumblr staff wasn't incompetent). The only way was to just torch it all.

(though MAYBE if SOMEONE had actually ACKNOWLEDGED the problem in the past TEN YEARS that people have been complaining instead of waiting for it to get too big to handle...)

My solution would normally be to just add a filter that keeps you from seeing the stuff, but considering that there is a problem with Spambots, CP and people making accounts just to post porn and such, maybe the cleanse is necessary for a little a while. I'm not for doing it permanently. Just long enough to clean the place up.

In response to Snuffysam, I think people did report it and acknowledge it, but we're talking about social media. It has billions of people there and one person can have and usually does have multiple accounts. Plus, these spambots are programmed to create new accounts so once you deactivate one, multiple ones spring forth. It's Hercules fighting the Hydra. And it's funny that you're mentioning torching it because that's exactly how it was all stopped. The problem isn't the Tumblr Staff. It's that they're outnumbered and their opponents don't fight fair.

I’m not terribly upset that it will become functionally useless to me now, (I’ve seen even a lot of the safe artists I like saying they’ll move on) but with regard to my thread which I might close- where do we post tiddies/ find new artists now?

Thank you for the link, Lee! I've got posts spanning over a number of years, so I'm sure this export is gonna take a long ass time lmao

Honestly, tumblr hasn't been doing me a lick of good since I started my webcomic and did less fanart; I'm lucky if I get more than 10 notes on my posts anymore. Tumblr has actively chewed up and spit out any artists looking for exposure, and this latest move is probably going to cause a mass exodus, and updating it won't even be worth it anymore.

I might keep my Court of Roses tumblr blog, but even that, I dunno. I just know I'm gonna start making my own art website, which'll probably do me a lot more good, putting all my info into an organized space.

I'm with Kelsey on this one. Do NOT leave Tumblr because of the cleanse. There are so many other places where you can enjoy your bold content. I would abandon Tumblr just because of what the bad apples did. Trust me, this cleanse will not be permanent and even if it is, so what? You won't get your bold content or get to post it there anymore, but you'll still have other options. Plus, you won't be getting stuff you won't want. I think it's unfair to abandon and blame Tumblr for what irresponsible and sick people did. It's like blaming McDonald's for obesity. People have a chose over what they post and they should be held accountable for it.

If you're a Tumblr law abiding citizen, I say stay because Tumblr is going to need people like you to help rebuild it even if you did make NSFW content that was at least acceptable.

This has been a problem for years, and it could have been quelled if anyone on staff was actually competent enough to do anything.

In the early years (2008-ish), the site wasn't big enough where the problem would have overwhelmed the staff. They could have gotten rid of the worst blogs manually, and there's plenty you can do to stop bot accounts.

In the middle years (2013-ish), the site was super big, but it was also well funded. Yahoo had just bought the site for a billion big ones - I have a hard time believing they couldn't have afforded to hire more people tasked with getting rid of the issue.

Like, there's a reason none of the really big sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have this (specific) problem. Enough money, manpower, and algorithms thrown at the problem can go a long way if the people running the site actually care.

You realise that some people make a living out of making this content right? And a lot of commissioners come from Tumblr. Deleting their blogs is shitty even if it's not permanent, it's still a lot of money lost. If people want to leave the site in protest they have the right to.

Seriously, porn bots and creeps are one of the lesser problems on the site in my opinion. Funny that this is where we draw the line but not fetishization of murderers, encouragement of killing yourself, or advocating for actual genocide, things that there are an abundance of on the website.

I'm actually glad to hear this (and hopefully DevArt will take notice and follow suit) I will probably use tumblr more now if it is not overrun with porn-bots and kiddie porn. There are so many other porn sites on the internet, like so SOOO Many. Telling the perverts to stay off of what is supposed to be an art site isn't unfair, you have like the entire rest of the damn internet to spooge over. Some of us would like to be able to browse for art and new artists without getting an eyefull of genitals engulfing anything, being stuffed into things, or cartoon characters doing same. (It's amazing the number of people who think drawn porn doesn't somehow count)

And if you read the notice tumblr gave out, they aren't banning all nudity, you can still post breast-feeding, birth pictures, and anything health-related, as well as actual art that contains nudity. Any classic art will still stay up, I expect that things like modern nude sculpture and art will get to stay up, and once they've cleared out most of the porn, things like art photography can be allowed (or at least I hope so).

Well... no there aren’t that many sites that have open enough rules and a wide enough reach to compare to tumblr. It is, or was, a monster, and I’ll miss how easy it was to use.

My issue with them right now is their definition of what you are calling acceptable nsfw (which I’m guessing is the same I don’t quite understand) is purposefully quite vague and I think out of touch

They also aren’t doing this because management have suddenly decided to be “law abiding” the apps been missing from the apple store for weeks, they’re loosing viewers and advertising dollars and wanna get apple (and google?) back on board

Anyway. Let it go the way of live journal who else remembers the world ending when that site came to an end? Something else will fill the void

The way it’s written though it’s SO open to them dictating what is and is not an acceptable nude, you’re right if people want a clean site and this all works out for them I think it could be good but you gotta understand business owners and regular artists, adults, don’t like being told what’s acceptable for them to create and be thrown in a bag and punished with peds

Aaaah, what a blissful day! I hated that site anyway and now it does us, NSFW artists a perfect service - it's going to sacrifice itself and be an example of what happens when a site goes against its own core audience. Let's all strap in, get popcorn and enjoy the show. And hope that other sites will take notes. I am looking at you, Deviantart.

I don't like being considered the equivalent of a pedo because I like demon smut pretty pictures of Krampus.
Don't really know how Tumblr is going to police this since it's an extremely large site and there's private blogs, private posts and password protected blogs, UNLESS they're just hitting a massive wipe button to get rid of all nsfw content, OR they have an AI or bot set up for it to mass delete nsfw stuff.
Which is a shame because now I can't do penis paintings male anatomy studies if the bot or whomever deems said pic as "this penis is slightly too erect to be allowed!"

I'm being facetious in saying this, but what are they going to do about all the classical Greek art with Pan's goat peeper out or satyr horse dongs?

I visit Tumblr maybe once a month and never got an account, so I don't really care anyway, but I still heard of its awful reputation.

But if you ask me, the place that really needs cleansing would be DeviantArt. Tumblr is a lost cause, and while cleansing NSFW content is always good news, it doesn't mean they'll remove all the other bad stuff and horrible opinions from equally horrible users, so tbh I'd just let the site founder instead of bothering with it. Removing all that stuff sounds like way too much work.

On the other hand, DA still has some potential as a decent place if you remove the creepy stuff and ignore the trolls, and I actually use it (well, not every day), so I'd be very happy if they followed Tumblr's example.

Ironically, despite being a massive perv and a regular Tumblr user (I mostly blog about Zelda and Magic), I don't actually follow any explicit blogs there. There's one webcomic I read that edges into pinup territory sometimes but nothing even these rules would block. Everything else is almost obnoxiously wholesome.

This is still a pretty dumb move. If the problem is CP, ban CP. If the problem is bots, ban bots. If the problem is that you can't enforce bans fast enough, making more things bannable won't make things any easier.
