Been learning Spanish since late '17, but since few months the effects of "Intermediate Plateau" are intensifying...

I know the basics, but only comprehend 1/3 of spoken language, without subs. Still trying to learn through YT vids, immersing hard.

It'd be really nice if my colleagues stopped trying to get me to hook up with the only male colleague who is single. No, I'm not "willing, just scared". No, I'm not just "too shy to ask". No, I'm not secretly in love I just don't know it yet. No, it's not "nearly too late" because I'm 32. And no, I'm absolutely not obliged to "give him a chance". It doesn't fucking work that way.

One female colleague actually yelled at said male colleague to "ASK HER NOW! YOU MUST! SHE'S ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH YOU, SHE'S JUST WAITING FOR YOU TO ASK BECAUSE YOU'RE A MAN! DO IT!" while I was right there. His response was throwing on his helmet, jumping on his motor scooter like a cowbow mounting a horse and booking it. That particularly female colleague has now developed a habit of staring at me in order to find the spark of love in my eyes whenever that male colleague is around. It's not there. Stop eyeballing me.

EDIT: Today my supposed crush again denied he's in love with me, but outright said we are friends (which is something he hasn't said before). So that's a bit of a relief on my behalf, since colleagues have been telling me he loves me. They also told him I love him (wtf, we aren't living in a Shojou Manga), so I didn't know what to think anymore.

Later on I stumbled upon Instructor and we chatted a bit while he was blocking the road in his car. He wants to ride together when spring's come. I have friends. :) Doesn't sound like a bit deal, but I was That Autistic Kid in school and went most of puberty practically friendless. Now I do have friends and it's nice. I especially like that some of them are of the opposite gender. It's important for the genders to mix IMO.

What a pain, Phoenix. Separation by language and the elitism/separationism that often goes with it really is a problem, isn't it? Belgium and Canada are examples, and the situation in Romania with the Roma and the Hungarian minority isn't great either.

I'm especially disappointed by the approach your school took. Schools should unite, not divide. A large group of people is not being adequately prepared for the future and is actively marginalised by society. It's appalling. No wonder you're worried about the future. The government should enforce the law so speakers of Swedish, as speakers of one of the two official languages, aren't bereft of help and equal opportunities.

Yeah, that struck a nerve.

I'm sick and tired of the language barriers in my country.

Oof, I never realized it's that bad! D:

Probably 'cause even if I'm from place with plenty of Swedish-Speaking-Finns and my grandma's one, I'm not and all the peers spoke Finnish well in school regardless of the language they used at home. Maybe it's again the location (Southern Archipelago) but we did have mandatory Swedish until graduating high school. After that I had one course of mandatory Swedish when I was getting my bachelor's but that's very little compared to what I was used to. Some schools let you drop it in middle school? That's so weird! Like you said Swedish is an official language. Everyone should know at least the basics.

I agree that it sucks that it's so hard to get service in Swedish here. I'm pretty sure it's easier to get it in English... You've totally got the right to be pissed about it. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be that you can get forms in Swedish but then no one can actually answer any questions or explain things. Or people not knowing enough of the language to communicate even in the most simple of customer service jobs. ...I know I can't point a finger too hard on people before turning into a hypocrite since I too have forgotten a good chunk of the vocabulary due having little need for it but honestly, people should make the effort. In a bi-lingual country you definitely should get service in Swedish!

Also, what's wrong with those teachers??? Who does that??? How the heck can a whole school staff be that discriminatory???

plus, let me fight the idiots saying all those things.

I have to draw the next comic page tonight and I don't feel like it. I need to find the passion for continuing my comic. I want to continue, but I just don't want to draw. Yeah, that's my grievance.

update: hands are hurting again!!!!!! :) yay!!!!!

too bad I'm so nervous about seeing my doctor since her main concern is making me find a therapist and she doesn't actually seem to believe or give a rat's arse about the hand problems. She even disregarded my nervous tic. As did the specialists she recommended/arranged for me.

No, no, no, I do NOT trust her idea of a good therapist, seeing as everyone for everything else has done a terrible job and just told me "you're fine and wasting our time, goodbye"

I don't even want to say anything else, not because of how disgusted beyond words I am or that there's nothing else to be said-- but because my hands are hurting too much to continue typing. Bye.

florida is terrible for obvious reasons, but one thing i'm extremely sick of: the giant palmetto bugs. they're basically cockroaches, except massive and will come into your clean ass house for no other reason than to scare the shit out of you.

Babble visited for the holidays, and since it was cold, a lot of them came into the house through the drains. they've been a bigger problem this year than other years and it stresses me the hell out. i live in fear.

Have you considered getting a second opinion from another doctor, or isn't that possible/practical?

this. post. blew. my. mind.

i don't know what to say! that seriously sucks how people actually treat swedish speakers, i'm shocked to hear this. also, it's kind of shocking that you would be discouraged from hanging out with finnish speakers! how can you... even be? how large even is the fennoswede community? i just looked up if fennoswede is a real word and FOUND OUT YOU GUYS HAVE YOUR OWN FLAG?!

i mean i've been vaguely aware of some of this stuff, and i even knew that you're not swedes that just live in finland. but i still seriously thought that finnish bilinguality was this weird vestigial thing where not actually a significant portion of finns speak fluent swedish. you can find more finns that are fluent in english than swedish, and a lot of finns don't speak swedish at all. like i NEVER in a million years would expect someone out of the blue to just speak even a basic swedish sentence to me and expect me to understand.

my country is a lie and i don't understand anything. i feel 100% seriously enlightened and sidelined.

phoenixjklin:It's hard to see it from the other side of the coin sometimes, especially if you don't have to, and even more so if you don't even know it's happening.

so much this.
phoenixjklin:Finnish-speakers can make do without swedish.

make do? MAKE DO?! hell yeah boi i can make do without swedish in finland, just like i can make do without night-vision or wings.

and btw don't take anything i said here as a negative, i'm just so fucking shocked i need to express it somehow and this is absolutely the strained minimum of politeness and civility i'm capable of rn

A box was delivered to me two weeks ago. It had my address on it, but a stranger's name. It has a store logo on the side and the store is listed as the return address (they're about an hour away), so I contacted their customer service and asked what should be done about this. They apologized and said the best thing to do would be take it to FedEx and tell them to return to sender. Which I thought was kind of ridiculous- why should I waste any of my time on an errand to right someone else's mistake? But being the doormat I am, I went out of my way to go to a FedEx that is 15 minutes out of the way of my usual commute, to an area I don't normally go, and I have anxiety about driving, and I got lost on my way home. Anyway, I took it to that FedEx and told them to return to sender. The woman there seemed perplexed and almost didn't take it, but then wrote "refused, doesn't live there" on the box and kept it. Good, I thought. Done.

A few days later this frick fracking box is back on my porch. I sent a reply on my initial correspondence chain with the store and received no response. I sent a new request and have received no response. Like, it's illegal to destroy or dispose of someone else's mail, but I'm not putting any more active energy into getting this box to anyone. I told them I would arrange a safe place to leave it outside of my house that FedEx could collect it from, but as I said, they haven't responded. They've probably already sorted it out with the intended recipient and sent them a replacement and can't be bothered to deal with recovering this item. So it's just sitting here. In my house. This freaking cursed buttface box.

I'm mad.

If I leave it on my porch with "return to sender" furiously scribbled over every inch of it and leave the country for three weeks, I think I'll have done my duty as a good citizen and will assume the best if it's gone when I get back.

"There's probably nothing good in it."

Yeah, I think that would be the responsible thing to do.

According to wiki it's only about 376,000 people, so to be honest I'm not surprised we can stay under the radar for the most part. Also the fact that we basically have to learn finnish to survive, so unless people know you speak swedish, they probably won't try to have a conversation with you in swedish.

taikina:i just looked up if fennoswede is a real word and FOUND OUT YOU GUYS HAVE YOUR OWN FLAG?!

Oh wow, I didn't even know this. I've also never hear fennoswede before but it sure is easier to say than swedish-speaking-finn, hahah. That wiki also mentions "swedo-finnish" which I've also never heard. Of course I've only been taught the most unconventional way to say it.
Also slightly bummed about all articles referring to us as "swedes" which probably strengthens the belief we're all swedes living in Finland. Oh well, probably can't change that anymore.

taikina:you can find more finns that are fluent in english than swedish, and a lot of finns don't speak swedish at all. like i NEVER in a million years would expect someone out of the blue to just speak even a basic swedish sentence to me and expect me to understand.

Yup. If you try to speak swedish with personnel in a store somewhere they'll most of the time stare for a while, as if you're an idiot for trying or expecting hoping they'll understand, until you eventually have to give in and try with very bad finnish to explain what you wanted.
Thankfully I live in an area that has more swedish-speakers now, but dang is it anxiety inducing anyway whenever I go somewhere, just in case I meet a finnish-speaker.

taikina:my country is a lie and i don't understand anything. i feel 100% seriously enlightened and sidelined.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, heh.

taikina:make do? MAKE DO?! hell yeah boi i can make do without swedish in finland, just like i can make do without night-vision or wings.

Hahah, well, maybe I underestimated the proper words needed to describe that. Perhaps "Finnish-speakers don't need swedish" would be more accurate.

taikina:and btw don't take anything i said here as a negative, i'm just so fucking shocked i need to express it somehow and this is absolutely the strained minimum of politeness and civility i'm capable of rn

No offense taken! I appreciate you taking interest in the subject.
