Hello people

As some of you may remember, I've recently come to realize that phones actually have the internet on them these days. I know what you're thinking, "the internet? how is that going to fit onto my 40x40 pixel nokia lcd screen?" well they upgraded phone screens too!! it fits now!!!!

uh, anyway, as I promised when I delivered you CF Narrowโ„ข, in order to address the fact that most of our default layouts aren't really super mobile friendly, and most of the custom layouts based on them therefore also aren't very mobile friendly, I've now also come up with an additional way to view your webcomics: a CF-integrated mobile friendly infinite scroll viewer thingy! You know, you just keep on scrolling, and the comics keep on coming, it's amazing what technology can do these days. Weird that we're the first site to ever use this technology on webcomics, right?

Now, since it's integrated with CF, this is seperate from your webcomic site and has its own seperate URL. So if your comic is at e.g. kyoscoolcomic.thecomicseries.com, you'll be able to access it in this new infinite scroll mode by navigating to http://comicfury.com/read/kyoscoolcomic! There will also be a link on your Comic Profile, and you can choose which mode you prefer for viewing CF webcomics in your account settings.

Check it out! Now a fair warning ahead of time - this won't be able to do everything your regular webcomic site can do. It's not really meant as a replacement for it, more as a supplementary reading method for mobile users and people who just prefer infinite scroll. Due to technological limitations, a lot of the stuff that you can do on your custom webcomic site just isn't possible in the context of an infinite scroll viewer (at least one that doesn't completely murder your ram by just loading everything and never unloading anything, hoping you don't scroll far enough that it crashes)

Most notably, it won't be able to display comic pages with embedded content/HTML instead of images (if you're not sure what that means, you're probably not using it). Instead it will just show a link to your regular webcomic site for these pages, so people can view it there. If your webcomic relies on HTML embeds a lot, this probably won't be terribly useful for you, sorry. It also cannot display HTML components in your author comments, and likewise it can't display any images embedded into comments via BBCode. Since it's integrated into CF, it's also not customizable at all right now.

That being said, there are also some upsides to the way this thing is set up. Since the viewer is on the comicfury.com domain, it can directly see who you're logged in as, so it'll allow you to preview scheduled comics on your own webcomic, and it'll also display comments pending moderation (if you're using that feature) directly in context for authors. Additionally, you can leave comments and replies directly on the page, instead of via a popup. since you can scroll by stuff so fast, I made sure that leaving comments is super easy.

also note that if you try it on desktop, you will see something completely different than people on mobile phones (it responds to screen size), just to avoid any confusion.

okay, end of explanation. pls check it out, i tried very hard to make it good.

Now, we're still not all the way done with the grand mobile update, as I've said in the first thread about it, the next step will be also reworking our default layouts to be a bit more mobile friendly and responsive, to make the mobile experience good when people check out your main site on their phone.

Some anticipated questions & answers:Can we have this on our webcomic sites instead of integrated to CF / can we customize the HTML?

Probably not. I originally planned for this to be the next step once all the bugs are ironed out, but having worked my way through this now, I can decisively say that this will almost definitely never happen. Read on if you care about the technical reasons why.

I'm seeing warning screens for some webcomics

Unlike webcomic sites, this thing by default will warn people if a comic has certain flags. Same reason your webcomic avatar/banner cannot contain NSFW content, I want people to be relatively sure that if they click a link that starts with comicfury.com, that they're not gonna see anything they don't want to see (within reason)

If you don't want to be warned, you can turn the warnings off in your account settings, or configure which flags it'll warn you on.

By default it will warn for the following flags:

image: Any level of nudity
image: Strong sexual themes
image: extreme violence/gore

Oh and just to be extra clear, you don't have to log in to see webcomics it'll warn people on, you just have to click a button on the warning screen. For people who are logged in though, you can also permanently disable the warning just for specific webcomics. Anything you're subscribed to will also not show a warning screen.

Where are the gators!!

You might notice that our mascot gators are absent from the header in this fancy infinite scroll viewer. The reason I opted to modify the header on the viewer is that I figured that the gators might clash thematically with the content of some webcomics. Since you're forfeiting control over the visual presentation of your webcomic here, I wanted your heavy hitting emotional moments to not be forcibly accompanied by jubilant gators, fun as they may be. That being said, I did sneak in a lil gator icon, that's a little more neutral, for the webcomic profile link on smaller screens. Oh yeah by the way, all the icons for this thing were made by me! I watched a bunch of inkscape tutorials on youtube, are you proud of me?

okay that's all, this was so much more difficult to wrangle together than i expected, someone make me a hot chocolate and bring me a blanket please

oh yeah, and if you try it out, and something doesn't seem quite right, you find a bug, or have any good suggestions, let me know! I'm sure there will be bugs, it's all pretty finnicky logic, like a house of cards, one blow from caving in

e: If you have a custom layout, you can use the variable [v:infinitescrolllink] and it will be replaced with a link to the current (comic) page on the infinite scroll viewer.

I usually hate infinite scrolling on webcomic platforms but I really like this! It still shows where the page breaks and includes the comments. It's something I would actually make use of, and I use a desktop computer.

Kyo this is so cool, thank you!!!

I'm guessing though that the only way to give people this option who don't read the forums/ your how to is to link it on your site? Like a "click here for scroll version"?

Thanks again, Kyo!

Yes, you would probably want to add a link that says "mobile version" or "infinite scroll version" or something linking to your scroll version of the site, for non-CF users. I'll do this for all the default layouts as well.

Thanks! Also is there a way to choose the one step comment option that infinite scroll has for the desktop version? Like instead of having to click "Post a comment" the comment box and post option are already there? I like that especially :)

Edit: in default layouts that is

it's a little more complicated to do on webcomic sites, since you're not directly logged in on those, but I do plan to also do this! Technically you can already somewhat do it by just putting the comment box in an iframe, but it's a little clunky

Iโ€™m kinda confused with all the coding jargon but I think I get the basic gist.

The only thing Iโ€™m wondering is if we change from single page to infinite scroll, will we have to redo our website or will our personal website reformat itself??

Fantastic work by the way, as usual. Thank you for all you do, Kyo.

it's not really so much that you reformat, it's that there's now a second way to access your webcomic, that's seperate from the first. If you check your comic profile, there'll be two icons at the top, click the infinity one, you can just check out how your webcomic looks. Sorry, I think I tend to go a bit hard on explaining how everything works in detail

Tried it on my own comic, figured I'd try turning JavaScript off for a laugh, andโ€ฆ

Wait what, it actually works without JavaScript!?

I was actually thinking of requesting that, but I was too embarrassed to, thinking it'd be too much work.

I think you're like literally the only the person on the entire planet that's even tried to implement infinite scroll comics with progressive enhancement.
